Carrots are grown in many parts of China because they have low environmental requirements, strong adaptability, and are easy to manage, making them a vegetable variety that growers plant quite often. In the actual growing process, carrots are very prone to the common disease damping-off, and for growers, once this disease occurs, it causes great losses, ranging from reduced yield to being unfit for sale and simply dying off. Below let us take a look at what damage carrot damping-off causes and how to prevent and control it.

I. What is carrot damping-off?

Damping-off is a disease that appears relatively easily during the carrot seedling-raising period, and whether seedlings are raised in summer and autumn or in winter and spring, this disease appears relatively easily. After the carrot seedlings emerge and before the true leaves have unfolded, if they are infected by this pathogen there will be certain signs. For example, water-soaked spots appear below the seedling stem, darker in color, and then gradually expand as the carrot stem grows, slowly becoming thin thread-like shapes. As the aboveground part of the carrot seedling loses its support, it then topples over. When the humidity of the seedbed increases, white cotton-like mycelium appears on the diseased carrot seedlings or on the bed surface near them, rather densely.

II. What damage does carrot damping-off cause?

Once carrot damping-off occurs, carrot seedlings will topple over, pressing close to the ground, and the leaves slowly rot. The color of the carrot also changes, going from brown all the way to death. Carrot damping-off survives as mycelium in diseased plant residues in the soil, and then spreads through rain, manual watering, plowing, and similar activities.

III. How to prevent and control carrot damping-off?

1. Seeds must be disinfected

Seed disinfection is a relatively commonly used and effective method for carrots. We can choose to soak carrot seeds in warm water, dress the seeds with medicinal powder, or soak them in a medicinal solution for disinfection, which can effectively prevent and control damping-off.

2. Seedbed management must be done properly

After the carrots emerge, the film and straw covering them must be removed immediately, so as to ventilate in time, lower the temperature, and reduce humidity. Then move the carrot seedlings into pots, doing so gently, trying as much as possible to avoid injuring the young tender seedlings, so as to prevent infection of the pathogen through wounds. After the transplanted carrot seedlings survive, attention must also be paid to ventilation, so as to grow strong seedlings, reduce the humidity and temperature of the seedbed, and let them receive plenty of light.

3. Treat immediately once disease is found

If damping-off occurs in carrots, and it is in the early stage, professional agents can be chosen for prevention and control when the weather is clear. Everyone can go to a specialized pharmacy to buy them, and carefully read the instructions, and not use the drugs blindly.
