How to Plant an Elm Tree? Detailed Guide to Planting Methods and Care Tips
The elm tree, also known as the white elm (Ulmus pumila), has long been called “elm wood knot” and has very high ornamental value. It is not only cold-resistant but also pollution-resistant, with a strong ability to trap dust on its leaves. At present, it is mostly planted in green spaces and along roadsides. So how do you plant an elm tree?
1. Soil requirements
It is best to choose relatively loose soil for planting. Before planting, we need to do some weeding, as only then can the elm tree's survival rate be higher. It should be noted that the soil is best relatively fertile.
2. Sowing
(1) Sowing time: Elm seeds are generally sown using the method of sowing as soon as they are collected. After the elm seeds (elm samaras) mature in mid-April each year, they can be collected at the appropriate time and sown in good time according to the weather conditions.
(2) Seed selection: For elm seeds, you can choose seeds collected in the current year, but you must be sure to screen the seeds and keep the high-quality ones. In addition, you can also choose from a professional seed company, so that you can select a more suitable quality according to your local climate conditions, and the quality is also more guaranteed.
(3) Sowing method: Most elm seeds are sown in drills, which is relatively simple and easy to manage later. Generally, about 4 kg of seeds per mu of land is enough.
(4) Sowing steps: Generally, after opening a furrow and sowing the seeds, you should cover them with soil and press them down appropriately to ensure full contact between the seeds and the soil. In addition, if the soil is relatively dry, do not irrigate with a large volume of water. It is best to use the method of spraying the soil surface, so that too much water does not wash the seeds away. After the seeds sprout, the seedlings generally emerge in about 10 days. When the young seedlings grow to about 2-3 cm, we need to thin them out. Generally, when the seedlings reach a height of 5-6 cm, they can be thinned to a final stand. In addition, there is the routine management of watering, fertilizing and weeding during the seedling stage, which is relatively simple.
3. Transplanting
The roots need to go completely into the soil, and it should be planted relatively straight. Do not let it lean to one side. At the same time, after planting it in the soil, we must press the soil down firmly. This is something we need to pay special attention to.
4. Management techniques after transplanting
(1) Reasonable watering: In the early stage, we can choose to water once every 2 days. The elm tree's demand for water is not particularly high, so we do not need to water it every day. Each time we water, it is enough to ensure the soil is moist. After 3 months, we can choose to water once a week.
(2) Reasonable fertilizing: Generally, it is better to fertilize one week after planting. Choose to fertilize with organic fertilizer. When fertilizing, do not apply it toward the roots, but rather toward the edge of the root area.
(3) Pruning: The main thing to prune is the lower branches. Generally, branches will show signs such as withering and yellowing, and we need to cut them off. If this does not occur, and we want the elm tree to grow taller and stronger, we also need to prune it.
(4) Cold protection: In winter, we generally should apply whitewash treatment to protect against the temperature, so as to avoid the elm tree being frostbitten or frozen to death. This is something we need to know.
