How to plant cypress vine seeds? A detailed guide to the correct sowing method
Cypress vine flower, also known as five-pointed star flower, is a common flower in galleries and woodlands. Because its blooms are very beautiful, it is deeply loved by flower enthusiasts, and some specially grow a pot at home. So how do you plant cypress vine seeds?
1. Sowing:
(1) Sowing time: Cypress vine is suitable for sowing in early spring in March-April. In southern regions it can be done earlier, while in northern regions sowing should be appropriately delayed for a period.
(2) Sowing method: Using ordinary nutrient soil for seedling raising and cultivating seedlings will allow it to grow well. When sowing with a seedling tray, the sowing rate is about 100 grams per square meter of seedbed. After sowing, cover with about 1.5 cm of fine soil. It must not be too thin, otherwise the seedlings easily emerge with the seed coat still attached. Control the soil temperature at 20-25°C; dry seeds emerge in 4 days after sowing. Five-pointed star flower seedlings emerge easily, but often unevenly, so seeds should be carefully selected to make the seedlings uniform. Seedlings are very afraid of drought; when drought is slightly severe they will wither and die, and even watering makes it hard for them to recover. Special attention should be paid to this during seedling raising.
2. Planting:
Five-pointed star flower is planted out after the last frost. In areas where nighttime temperatures are still relatively low, generally speaking, early planting out is not recommended. For single-row planting, the plant spacing is about 35 cm; for seedling-raised cultivation or fertile soil, the plant spacing should be appropriately larger.
3. Management techniques after planting:
(1) Watering: During the growth period, five-pointed star flower should generally be watered once a day. In summer, when the climate is hot and the plants grow vigorously, it should be watered once in the morning and once in the afternoon, but water accumulation in the pot must be strictly avoided.
(2) Fertilizing: Apply a topdressing of decomposed liquid fertilizer water once a month to five-pointed star flower. There is no need to pinch off the growing tips throughout the entire growth period; let it climb naturally. As long as attention is paid to watering and fertilizing to promote rapid growth of the stems and vines, the flowering will be even more abundant.
(3) Guiding the vines: In the early stage, five-pointed star flower should be manually assisted in guiding the vines onto a trellis, fence, tree or other support. In the middle and later stages, the plant itself has a very strong climbing ability, so except for shaping, there is no need to manage it; just let it climb and twine freely.
(4) Seed collection: The capsule fruits of five-pointed star flower do not ripen uniformly, and after ripening they easily split open, so seeds should be collected in batches in a timely manner. Seeds have a lifespan of 4-5 years. The roots can be used as medicine and have the effect of clearing heat and reducing swelling, and are used to treat ear sores and hemorrhoids.
