As a plant that combines ornamental and medicinal value, the dragon tree (Dracaena) has strong properties, and its slender, colorful leaves are truly gorgeous. But does a single pot of dragon tree feel a bit monotonous? Many plant lovers want to try propagating a few pots themselves, so how do you propagate a dragon tree?

Propagation methods for the dragon tree

(1) Cutting propagation of the dragon tree

1. Cutting time

To propagate the dragon tree by cuttings, you can do it in spring and summer each year. This is its peak growing season, when the branches are highly active and the rooting and survival rate is high.

2. Selection of cuttings

From a potted dragon tree, cut a one-year-old semi-lignified young stem as the cutting, about 8-15 cm long, and it should be a stem segment containing more than 3 buds.

Note: The cut on the cutting should be close to the lowest bud, and the cut surface should be smooth, as this is favorable for rooting. In addition, keep as few leaves on the cutting as possible.

3. Cutting medium

For the dragon tree's cutting medium, it is best to use moist plain sandy soil as the medium.

4. Starting the cuttings

Before cutting, disinfect the cutting with alcohol, then insert it into the medium, leaving 1/2 exposed. Wrap the exposed part in a plastic bag to maintain humidity. After that, keep the room temperature at 20-25°C, and roots will form in about 1 month.

(2) Layering propagation of the dragon tree

Besides cuttings, air layering is also commonly used for propagating the dragon tree. This propagation method is generally carried out in May-June. Specific operation: On a potted dragon tree, select a robust main stem. At 20 cm from the top, perform ring barking, 1 cm wide. Then cover the wound with moist moss and wrap it with plastic film, keeping the room temperature above 20°C. Roots will form in about 40 days.

(3) Seed propagation of the dragon tree

In September, the dragon tree's seeds will mature, so seed sowing can also be used as a propagation method for the dragon tree. Because the dragon tree's seeds are large, shallow pots are often used for spot sowing. After sowing, keep the room temperature at 24-27°C, and they will sprout after 2 weeks.
