How to Plant Gazania Seeds? A Detailed Guide to Sowing Methods
Gazania generally refers to Gazania rigens (treasure flower), which blooms from May to October and is a common potted flower and bedding plant. It can be propagated by seeding, division, cuttings and tissue culture, so how do you plant its seeds? Let's find out together below.
How to plant gazania seeds?
1. Time
Generally speaking, gazania can be sown in spring or autumn, that is, around April and September. In northern regions, spring sowing can be appropriately delayed and autumn sowing appropriately advanced, while in southern regions the opposite applies: spring sowing earlier and autumn sowing later.
2. Seed selection
Select seeds that are plump, undamaged and free of pests and diseases, and remove hollow or damaged seeds to ensure the germination rate.
3. Sowing
In April or September, broadcast the seeds on fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam soil, and cover the seeds with about 0.8 cm of fine soil. The optimum temperature for germination is 16-18°C, and germination occurs 14-30 days after sowing.
4. Seedling stage management
During the seedling stage, keep the temperature at 15-25°C, maintain moderate soil moisture, and ensure full light exposure. Reduce the temperature 5-7 days before planting out, increase ventilation, and harden off the seedlings with moderate water control. Plant out in the open ground after the last frost. In some regions the seeds are capable of self-sowing and reproducing.
