Anthurium, also called flamingo flower, is an evergreen herbaceous plant. Its spathe is bright red, and its spadix is yellow, with dazzling, brilliant colors. How should such a beautiful plant be grown, and what are the anthurium cultivation techniques?

Anthurium cultivation techniques

1. Choose a soil with very good air permeability; simply mix loose, fertile leaf mold, sandy soil, and perlite evenly, and keep the pH value between 5.2-6.1.

2. Ceramic flower pots or plastic flower pots can be used. The size of the pot should be chosen according to the size of the seedling. If it is a division seedling with 2-4 leaves, a diameter of 8-9 cm is fine. When the pot is full, it can be transplanted into a pot with a diameter within 20 cm.

3. Anthurium likes moisture. Usually pay attention to keeping the soil moist. In the seedling stage, because the root system is weak and distributed relatively shallowly in the substrate, it is not tolerant of drought. After planting, water should be sprayed 2-3 times a day, and the substrate should often be kept moist to encourage early rooting and more new roots, and pay attention to the dryness and moisture of the substrate on the pot surface. In the medium and large seedling stages, the plants grow quickly and need more water, so the water supply must be sufficient. During the flowering period, watering should be appropriately reduced and phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be increased to promote flowering.

4. For fertilizing anthurium, follow the principle of light fertilizer applied frequently. No fertilization is needed during the dormant period. Root fertilization of anthurium is more effective than foliar topdressing. In summer, apply fertilizer water once every 2 days; when the temperature is high, water once more. In autumn, generally apply fertilizer water once every 5-7 days.

5. Do not place anthurium under strong light for exposure. Throughout the year, it is suitable to cultivate it in an appropriately shaded environment. In spring, summer, and autumn, appropriate shading should be provided, especially in summer, when 70% shading is needed. Direct sunlight will make the leaf temperature higher than the air temperature. If the leaf temperature is too high, symptoms such as scorching, burnt leaves, fading of buds, and slowed leaf growth will appear.

6. On cloudy days, the temperature needs to be 18-20°C, and the humidity should be between 70%-80%. On sunny days, the temperature needs to be 20-28°C, and the humidity should be around 70%. In short, the temperature should be kept below 30°C, and the humidity should be above 50%. In winter, the indoor temperature should be controlled at 15-20°C.

7. Prune diseased leaves and withered leaves in time. If the leaves are too dense, cut off some old leaves.

8. Carry out division every year in April-May. Take the anthurium out of the flower pot, cut off side shoots with roots that have 3-4 leaves, and place them in a new flower pot. Place them in a ventilated and semi-shaded place. After they survive, place them indoors in a position near a south-facing window. Cuttings can also be carried out. Cut off old branches and trim away the leaves. Use every 1-2 nodes as a cutting seedling. Flat insertion or upright insertion are both acceptable. Insert them into loose, fertile soil. After about one month, roots and sprouts can grow.

Growing anthurium is relatively simple. The main things to pay attention to are watering, temperature, and the supply of light.
