How to Plant a Cactus After Cutting It Off? A Detailed Guide to the Planting Method
Cactus is a drought-tolerant green plant that can survive with rough, minimal care. And it is especially easy to propagate - you can simply cut off a piece and plant it. So how do you plant it after cutting? Below, the editor of Tuliu.com will explain it to you one by one.
How to plant a cut cactus?
1. Treatment
Place the cut cactus plant in a cool, shaded place and leave it for a few days until the wound is completely dry, then it can be planted. Never plant it before the wound has dried, as this easily causes the plant to become infected and rot, making it hard to keep alive.
2. Preparation
While waiting for the wound to dry, prepare a container and nutrient soil. For the container, it is suitable to choose a clay pot of appropriate size that is loose and has good breathability and drainage.
3. Planting
Bury the wounded end of the cactus into the soil, to a depth of about one quarter of the whole plant. After fixing the plant in place, do not rush to water it; it is best to wait until small roots begin to emerge from the base, then give it a little water. When watering, apply an appropriate amount to the soil near the plant, and do not pour it directly onto the plant.
4. Later care
Place the planted cactus in a place with plenty of light and good ventilation, and let it get plenty of sun. But in midsummer or when the sun is strong, provide shade. Water sparingly rather than generously, never let water accumulate in the pot, and keep the soil only semi-moist. In addition, June to August is the season of vigorous growth for cactus; to promote fast growth, generally water once a day. Keep the soil moist, pay attention to drainage during the rainy season, and do not water during the dormant period.
So, for a cut cactus, the most important thing is to wait until the wound is slightly dry before planting, and afterward just pay attention to light, water and fertilizer.
