Can blueberries be grown in Henan? An analysis of suitable conditions
As more and more people in society today love eating blueberries, more people are growing them too. Blueberries are no longer limited to one growing region, and many regions have begun trying to grow them. So can blueberries be grown in Henan?
I. Growth habits of blueberries
Blueberries can grow multiple times within a single growing season, with a second growth being fairly common. In southern China, blueberries have two growth peaks a year: the first is in May to June, and the second is from mid-July to mid-August.
The flowering period of blueberries varies noticeably with climate and variety. In southern China they bloom in early to mid-March, while in the north it is April to May; the flowering period is generally 15 to 20 days, and up to 40 days at the longest.
Blueberries are mostly cross-pollinated plants. Highbush blueberries can self-pollinate, but the degree of self-fertility varies noticeably among varieties; rabbiteye blueberries and lowbush blueberries are generally self-infertile, so when establishing an orchard for production, multiple varieties must be planted together to increase yield.
Blueberries are basically distributed worldwide, mainly in cool climates with ample sunlight, such as Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, Europe, North America, and the Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia and Jilin Changbai Mountain regions of mainland China. They grow in areas at altitudes of 900 m to 2,300 m, and are mostly found in coniferous forests, peat bogs, mountain tundra and pastures; they are also an important component of heath shrublands.
In China they are mainly found in Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Jilin and other regions. In the Changbai Mountains and the Greater and Lesser Khingan ranges of the northeast, many wild varieties and resources of blueberry-type plants such as wild bog bilberry (commonly known as dusi or dushi) and bilberry grow naturally.
II. Can blueberries be grown in Henan?
Whether blueberries can be grown in Henan depends on the local soil pH and site conditions: if the soil pH is around 4.5-5.0, the site is the middle or lower part of an east-facing or south-facing slope, and the slope is less than 30°, they can generally be grown. The specific situation should be taken as the standard.
If the soil pH is slightly high, deep ploughing can also be used to improve the soil pH, but if it is too high, it is not suitable for growing.
To grow blueberries in Henan, in addition to choosing the environment, you also need to choose the blueberry variety, selecting varieties with strong adaptability that suit the local environment for planting, as this is more conducive to blueberry growth.
