Peppers are a vegetable we cannot do without in daily life, especially in Hunan, Sichuan and other places, where eating spicy food is famously popular. Peppers are grown in many parts of our country, and during the seedling stage they are very susceptible to damping-off disease, mainly caused by unsuitable temperature, humidity and other conditions. Once the disease breaks out, it means a great loss for growers. Below let us take a look at the introduction to symptoms and control methods of damping-off disease in peppers.

1. Symptoms of damping-off disease in peppers

Damping-off disease in peppers generally begins as early as the cotyledon stage or before the true leaf stage of the seedlings. After the seedlings emerge, water-soaked lesions appear on the ground nearby, and gradually the leaves turn yellow, become sunken and curl up. Before the leaves have even withered, the plant collapses, and with just a gentle lift by hand it breaks off at the lesion. If the ground is relatively moist, a white cottony mold layer can be seen.

The damping-off pathogen overwinters in the soil or in diseased plant debris, so the disease tends to occur in places with relatively low terrain, relatively low temperatures and relatively clayey soil. Damping-off spreads through rain and watering, and the pathogen can also be spread through the use of contaminated fertilizer or activities such as transplanting.

2. Control methods for damping-off disease in peppers

1. Choose a suitable planting site

Because damping-off disease in peppers occurs during the seedling stage, choosing a suitable seedbed is crucial. The principle for our choice should be a place that is sheltered from wind, faces the sun, has high terrain, fertile soil, good aeration, is not clayey, drains easily and has no history of disease infestation.

After choosing the seedbed, the seedbed must be treated. Before sowing peppers, the soil must be thoroughly turned and sun-dried, and carbendazim wettable powder can be chosen for disinfection.

2. Disinfect the pepper seeds

To reduce the occurrence of disease, purchased pepper seeds should also be properly disinfected. We can soak the seeds to promote germination before sowing, which greatly shortens the time the seeds spend in the soil.

3. Strengthen cultivation management

When growing peppers, it is best not to rotate with vegetables of the non-solanaceous or non-cucurbit families, so as to avoid the soil carrying this pathogen.

When growing peppers, covering with plastic film can prevent pathogens in the soil from splashing onto the pepper seedlings, thereby reducing the chance of disease infection.

After the peppers emerge, ventilation must be done well, and attention must be paid to the humidity of the seedbed, so that excessive humidity does not affect their growth.

Once a plant infected with the disease is found, it must be pulled out promptly, so that the disease does not spread to other healthy pepper seedlings.

4. Treat with medication in time

Once damping-off disease appears in pepper seedlings, it must be dealt with promptly and fully protected with fungicides. For specifics, you can ask at a professional seed market, or have them mix it for you directly.
