How to plant garlic sprouts in winter? Master these planting methods
The winter climate is cold, so planting vegetables requires extra care. So how do you plant garlic sprouts in winter?
1. Preparation before sowing
Choose a suitable variety, prepare the soil before sowing, and apply base fertilizer.
1. Seed selection
Choose an excellent variety with high yield and good adaptability for planting;
2. Soil preparation
Plow and level the land, divide it into beds and open the “three ditches”;
3. Fertilization
Apply enough base fertilizer at one time. The base fertilizer is generally applied per mu as 80-100 loads of decomposed soil and manure fertilizer, 20 kg of urea, 50 kg of phosphate fertilizer, 15 kg of potash fertilizer, or 50 kg of high-quality three-element compound fertilizer.
2. Sprout flushing
After the garlic sprouts grow, carry out sprout flushing.
Water about a week later to flush the sprouts. Before raising garlic sprout seedlings, if the ground of the garlic sprout field becomes hard, water it gently. If there is continuous rainy weather and the soil moisture is too high, drain it in time to prevent the garlic from rotting before the mother bulb, which would affect the normal growth of the garlic.
3. Field management
During the seedling raising period, carry out field management such as watering, film mulching, and loosening the soil.
1. Watering
Water according to the soil moisture content; you may water once first to increase the soil moisture.
Garlic likes water. Lack of water will cause yellow, withered leaf tips, and in severe cases death. However, when watering, use small water droplets for drip irrigation to prevent too much water from causing a recurrence of root rot. Therefore, after rain, do a good job of drainage, and water appropriately according to the growth of the garlic.
2. Film mulching
If the field plot is not covered with plastic film, you may cover it with a layer of weeds or manure before it freezes, to ensure the garlic seedlings survive the winter safely. In overwintering, make sure the film remains intact and prevent wind damage.
3. Loosening the soil
The seedling raising stage of garlic sprouts is a key period for field management. The garlic sprout field has no root protection, so the soil should be loosened to promote the development of the garlic sprout root system.
4. Fertilization
Garlic growth needs more nutrients, so fertilization in winter is very important. When the seedlings grow to about 3 leaves, topdress in time; if nutrients are insufficient, garlic is prone to yellowing leaves and premature aging. About half a month after sowing, apply appropriate topdressing according to the nutritional requirements of garlic growth.
4. Others
To help the garlic sprouts grow smoothly, timely film breaking and ditch clearing and soil loosening are needed.
1. Film breaking
Garlic begins to sprout about a week after sowing, although most seedlings can grow through the covering layer. But to help all garlic sprouts break through the film smoothly, when the garlic sprouts break the film, I can promptly break the film for the garlic sprouts, to prevent the garlic sprouts from taking too long to break the film, causing damage to the garlic sprout stems and affecting the growth of the garlic sprouts.
When the garlic film breaks, a small hole can be made in each seedling hole to ensure the garlic film breaks successfully. When damaging the film, do not damage the film, otherwise it will cause the film to lose its effect. Then check regularly every day to prevent the seedling film from not being broken and the seedlings from dying.
2. Clearing ditches and loosening soil
The humidity in the garlic field should not be too high, and the suitable range for garlic should be ensured. Too much water in the field easily causes garlic root rot, causing pests and diseases and reducing yield. Therefore, when garlic overwinters, promptly clean the ditches in the garlic field and loosen the soil to prevent soil moisture loss and affect the growth of garlic. Improve the soil structure, increase the soil temperature, and promote garlic root growth. When cleaning the hidden ditches, make sure each hidden ditch is connected, to prevent water from making the garlic clump together.
