Avocado: the suitable annual average temperature for growth is 20-25°C. Generally, cold-resistant varieties can withstand low temperatures of -6°C, while varieties with low cold resistance wither when exposed to 0°C; annual rainfall of more than 1000 mm is required. The avocado tree has shallow roots and fragile branches and cannot withstand strong winds; strong winds can cause reduced yields. A small amount is cultivated in parts of Guangdong, Fujian, Taiwan, China, and Yunnan in China. In northern regions of China, it is not suitable for planting.

The growing environment of avocado

1. Temperature: the most suitable growth temperature is 25-30°C; when it exceeds 44°C, the leaves are easily scorched, and high temperatures during the young fruit stage can also cause fruit drop. Cold resistance differs among strains, roughly Mexican > Guatemalan > West Indian; generally speaking, Guatemalan types only suffer freeze damage at -2°C, and late-maturing varieties such as Hass, when encountering low-temperature frost weather before harvest, are prone to freezing and dropping of the fruit.

2. Light: it is relatively shade-tolerant and not tolerant of harsh sun exposure, but after setting fruit it needs certain light conditions to help flower formation and fruit swelling.

3. Water: in areas with annual rainfall generally above 1000mm and a fairly even distribution of the rainy season, avocado can grow normally.

4. Soil: it is not suitable for growing in areas with excessively high soil salinity, poor soil, or a low water table; such an environment can cause root rot. The roots have a relatively high oxygen demand, and the soil oxygen content needs to reach more than 17% of the total soil air volume; a pH value between 5 and 7 is suitable.
