Bletilla striata is a traditional Chinese medicine name; it is harvested every year in September to October when the stems and leaves wither. Today I will introduce high-yield Bletilla striata cultivation techniques.

I. Site selection and land preparation

Choose loose, fertile, humus-rich loam. If planting on well-drained mountainous land, it is best to choose a shady slope of virgin wasteland for planting. Plow the soil more than 20 cm deep, apply 1000 kg of farmyard manure per mu, then plow again to mix the soil and fertilizer evenly.

II. Sowing

From September to November, dig out the Bletilla striata and select medium-sized tubers with many buds and no disease, each piece with 1 to 2 buds, dip them in plant ash, and then plant them. Open furrows and place the tubers at an appropriate plant spacing, cover with soil, compact it, and water; they sprout in March to April.

III. Field management

After the Bletilla striata seedlings emerge uniformly, spray acetochlor for closed weed control. May to June is the peak growth period for Bletilla striata, and weeds also grow very quickly, so weeds must be removed in time. Combine weeding with raking and loosening the bed surface; when weeding, hoe shallowly to avoid damaging the roots.

IV. Fertilizer and water management

Bletilla striata is a fertilizer-loving plant. Spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate or thin human and livestock manure once a month. From July to August it stops growing and enters dormancy, but weeds must be prevented from growing densely. The soil should be kept moist; water during drought, and from July to September water once in the morning and once in the evening. Bletilla striata is also afraid of waterlogging, so drain promptly after heavy rain to avoid damaging the roots.

Bletilla striata is distributed in East China, Central South China, Southwest China, and Gansu, Shaanxi, and other places. Guizhou has the largest output and the best quality.
