How to Propagate the Easter Cactus? A Detailed Guide to Common Propagation Methods
The Easter cactus (Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri) is an ornamental plant suitable for indoor growing. The plant often has a trailing habit, and its flowers are very bright and beautiful, making it a common ornamental variety in people's homes. Because the Easter cactus has beautiful flowers, it is loved by many people. So what are the propagation methods for the Easter cactus?
1. Cuttings
Between March and April, you can take cuttings. You need to cut about 5 segments of healthy, vigorous modified stems, then insert them into a warm bed, or you can insert them directly into potting soil. Remember to keep the soil moist; roots will form in about 40 days. At this point, let the cut surface dry slightly. When you observe that the young roots change from white to yellowish-brown, you can pot up the seedlings. Next, prepare the potting soil: first put organic fertilizer into the pot, then add soil, and then plant the young seedlings. After planting, carry out normal care.
2. Grafting
Grafting of the Easter cactus is usually done in spring and autumn. The rootstock used for grafting is mostly Hylocereus undatus, Pereskia, and flat-leaf cacti as grafting tools. If Hylocereus undatus is used as the rootstock, then one scion needs to be grafted onto each of its three ribs;
If a cactus is used for grafting, you need to cut an opening at its top, not too large, just moderate, then use a blade to peel off the surface skin layer on both sides of the base of the scion so that the xylem is exposed, and then directly insert the cutting into the cut opening of the rootstock. Note that you should also cover it with plastic film to protect the health of the grafted seedling from invasion by bacteria and other harmful substances, and then place it in a shaded area for care. Finally, once the grafted seedling takes root and sprouts, it can be transplanted.
3. Sowing
Sowing propagation of the Easter cactus is mostly used for breeding new varieties, so it is not often used. With sowing propagation of the Easter cactus, germination and growth generally occur about 2 weeks after sowing, and during the growing period, apply a dilute organic liquid fertilizer once every half month.
If you want to propagate the Easter cactus, choose the most suitable propagation method according to local conditions.
