Spearmint, also known as green mint, fragrant flower vegetable, spearmint, green mint, and blood coriander, is widely used in spices such as candy and toothpaste, and is cultivated in most parts of China. So how do you grow it from seeds? What are the propagation methods?

How to grow spearmint from seeds?

Choose a plot with good drainage and fertile soil, deep plow and prepare the land, apply enough fertilizer, and keep the ground moist. Then in spring or autumn, evenly sow the treated seeds into the soil, and they will sprout after a few days. However, because seed propagation generally produces great variation, the following methods are usually used for propagation and planting.

What are the propagation methods for spearmint?

1. Rhizome propagation

In early spring in March, dig up the underground rhizomes of spearmint, select fresh rhizomes that are robust, white in color, densely noded, and free of pests and diseases, cut them into root segments 6-8 cm long, and place them in prepared planting furrows 6-8 cm deep with a furrow spacing of about 25 cm. When placing them, each rhizome segment should be connected end to end. After placing them, cover with soil immediately, press firm, and water thoroughly. Each mu of field requires 100 kg of planted rhizomes, and the rhizomes from each mu of mother field can be transplanted to 8 mu of field.

2. Division propagation

In early spring, in the spearmint field from the previous year, wait until the new spearmint seedlings grow to about 8 cm, then dig them up together with the rhizomes, divide them, and transplant them, planting 2 plants per hole, with a row spacing of 25 cm and a plant spacing of 10 cm.

3. Cutting propagation

From May to June, select robust aboveground stems, cut them into small segments 6 cm long, and insert them into a seedbed for cuttings. After they take root and survive, transplant them. Regardless of which propagation method is used, before planting, the land must be carefully prepared, sufficient base fertilizer must be applied, and the field beds should be about 1.3 m wide to facilitate drainage, irrigation, and management.
