What specific remedy should be used when Chinese cabbage develops tipburn?
Chinese cabbage tipburn is a disease that appears during the process of growing Chinese cabbage. When this disease occurs, the outer appearance of the Chinese cabbage shows no abnormality, but the inner head leaves deteriorate. So what specific remedies for Chinese cabbage tipburn are there?
1. Causes of Chinese cabbage tipburn
Saline-alkali soil, irrigation with industrial wastewater, excessive application of ammonium sulfate or ammonium carbonate, or uneven application causing root burn, excessively long seedling hardening, and soil water deficiency all easily cause tipburn.
It mostly appears at the rosette stage, with the edges of the heart leaves drying up, curling inward, and growth being inhibited. At the early heading stage, the leaf edges are water-soaked, then turn yellow, semi-transparent, and become yellow-brown and scorched. After heading, the outer appearance shows no abnormality. When cut open, the upper parts of the 3rd to 4th inner head leaves appear dark brown and water-soaked, like paper.
2. Specific remedies for Chinese cabbage tipburn
When Chinese cabbage develops tipburn, calcium oxide, naphthaleneacetic acid, superphosphate, manganese sulfate solution, and other agents or mixed agents can be applied.
Method of use:
Water the plants and spray a mixed solution of 0.7% calcium oxide and 2000-fold naphthaleneacetic acid; or a 1% superphosphate solution, or a 0.7 manganese sulfate solution, once every 5-7 days, for a total of 3 times.
3. Other methods
Chinese cabbage tipburn can also be improved through methods such as watering, fertilizing, crop rotation, and calcium supplementation.
1. Watering
During the growth process of Chinese cabbage, sufficient water must be ensured. In cases of continuous drought, watering management should be strengthened, as this can prevent Chinese cabbage tipburn.
2. Fertilizing
When planting Chinese cabbage, use as little chemical fertilizer as possible for the base fertilizer and use more organic fertilizer, and control the soil pH, which can also prevent Chinese cabbage tipburn.
3. Crop rotation
For plots used to plant Chinese cabbage, avoid a previous crop such as cabbage and other crops with a relatively high calcium demand, as this is unfavorable to the growth and development of Chinese cabbage. If diseases such as blossom-end rot occurred when planting cabbage, most of the causes are due to calcium deficiency, so it is not suitable for the growth of Chinese cabbage. Another plot should be selected, or sufficient calcium fertilizer should be supplemented before planting.
4. Calcium supplementation
The calcium element is very beneficial to the growth of Chinese cabbage. It can not only reduce the occurrence of tipburn in Chinese cabbage, but also increase the growth rate of Chinese cabbage and enhance quality.
Starting roughly at the rosette stage, spray an appropriate amount of calcium superphosphate and other easy-to-use substances about once every week to increase the calcium content, for about one month.
