What are the common rice pests? Main species at a glance
Rice pests include rice thrips, rice skipper, rice leaf roller, rice planthopper, yellow stem borer, etc. Among them, the yellow stem borer only harms rice and is a monophagous pest. So let's learn about the relevant details of the yellow stem borer below.
Relevant details of the yellow stem borer
1. Morphology
The forewings of the adult are triangular. The forewings of the female moth are pale yellow, with a black dot in the center, and a tuft of yellow-brown fuzz at the end of the abdomen, which falls off after egg laying. The larval body is milky white or pale yellow-green. The prolegs are not well developed. The pupa is initially yellow-white, later turning yellow-green; the antennae of the male pupa reach 7/8 of the wing length, and the hind legs extend to the seventh or eighth abdominal segment.
2. Damage
Damage during the tillering stage produces deadheart seedlings in rice plants, and damage during the booting stage produces white heads. For rice plants at the jointing and heading stages, because it is difficult for the newly hatched larvae to bore in, their mortality rate increases.
3. Control
(1) Trapping and killing: When using frequency vibration lamps to trap adult insects, the lamps should be turned on at the beginning of the peak moth emergence period to trap and kill the adults.
(2) Pesticides: At the early stage of rice panicle cracking, use 20 milliliters of 5% fipronil suspension concentrate per mu, add 80 grams of 90% trichlorfon crystal, and spray with 50 kilograms of water; apply the second treatment 7 days later. Fipronil can also be sprayed at the peak of egg hatching and at the stage of panicle emergence, to prevent deadheart and white heads, with a recommended dosage of 45 milliliters per mu. To reduce costs and ensure control efficacy, fipronil can be mixed with commonly used stem borer insecticides or used alternately with conventional stem borer insecticides.
