A Detailed Guide to Fertilizing Eggplant: Timing and Correct Methods
Eggplant is a common vegetable in daily life, and some farmers grow it specifically to make money, but to get a high eggplant yield, you need to fertilize well, so what is the timing and method for fertilizing eggplant?
1. Nutrient requirements of eggplant
Eggplant's uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium increases. During the seedling stage, the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium accounts for only 0.05%, 0.07%, and 0.09% of the total, respectively. At the early flowering stage, the uptake gradually increases, and nutrient uptake from the fruiting stage to the final stage accounts for more than 90% of the whole period, with the fruiting stage accounting for about 2/3. The nutrient requirements differ at each growth stage. Fertilizer in the early growth stage mainly promotes vegetative growth of the plant. As the growth stage progresses, nutrient transport to flowers and fruits increases. During flowering, the uptake of nitrogen and potassium increases significantly. During this period, if nitrogen is insufficient, flower development is poor, short-styled flowers increase, and yield decreases.
2. Timing and methods of fertilizing eggplant:
1. Fertilizing before planting eggplant: per mu, apply 4000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer, 40 kg of diammonium phosphate, 30 kg of potassium sulfate, and 50 kg of superphosphate, then plow a second time; the plowing should be shallow so the fertilizer is mixed evenly.
2. Seedling stage: During the seedling stage, eggplant has a relatively high demand for phosphorus, which can promote flowering and fruiting and bring the fruiting time earlier. Therefore, during the seedling stage, phosphorus fertilizer application should be strengthened, though farmyard manure is still the main type used. When the seedlings grow to about 5 true leaves, if the plants are found to be lighter in color, foliar fertilizer should be sprayed appropriately to ensure healthy seedling growth.
3. Fruit-promoting fertilizer: When the first eggplant enters the growth stage, the fruit grows rapidly, and the whole plant enters the fruit growth stage. Stems and leaves also strengthen their growth capacity, nutrient demand increases at this time, and fertilizer application should also be increased. This stage is also the first topdressing for eggplant, aimed at promoting fruit growth and increasing nutrient accumulation, and it is a key period for fertilizing. Pay attention to the amount when fertilizing; the main fertilizer is ammonium sulfate, applied by the hole application method, and after fertilizing, cover with fine soil and water thoroughly to improve fertilizer use efficiency.
4. Full-fruit fertilizer: When eggplant enters the fruit enlargement stage, that is, the full-fruit stage, this is also a period of high nutrient demand for eggplant. Therefore, at this stage, a second topdressing should be carried out, called full-fruit fertilizer. Fertilizer at the full-fruit stage is mainly nitrogen fertilizer, supplemented by phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and attention should also be paid to applying foliar fertilizer and a small amount of trace elements. Together with watering, it promotes the plant's fertilizer uptake, enhances the plant's immunity, and promotes fruit enlargement, but pay attention to the amount; too much can easily cause fertilizer damage to eggplant.
