A Detailed Guide to Water Bamboo (Zizania latifolia) Cultivation Techniques and Planting Time
Water bamboo is an aquatic plant, generally seen in ponds and paddy fields, so when is the planting time and what are the cultivation techniques for water bamboo?
1. Water bamboo cultivation techniques:
1. Seed selection
Try to choose late-maturing, high-yielding double-crop varieties or early-market, high-yielding single-crop varieties, depending on your own market conditions and local environment. When selecting seedlings, it is best to choose water bamboo clumps that are vigorous, disease-free and free of male plants; that is, use a knife to cut off small clumps of water bamboo roots with mud as planting stock.
2. Land preparation
Choose a paddy field or shallow pond as the planting site, then deep-plow and apply sufficient base fertilizer. Generally, organic fertilizer or farmyard manure can be used as base fertilizer; try not to apply chemical fertilizer. After fertilizing, deep-plow the soil again to mix the soil and fertilizer evenly, then irrigate and rake level. Then reinforce and raise the field ridges. Water bamboo needs a certain water layer during growth, but the water layer should not exceed 20cm at its highest.
3. Transplanting
(1) Transplanting time: October-November.
(2) Transplanting method: Transplanting is generally done mainly in rows, inserting them into the mud at a row spacing of 0.8-1 m * 0.5-0.6 m.
4. Field management
(1) Water requirements: Water bamboo has different water requirements at each growth stage. Water demand is not great in the early growth stage, greater in the peak growth stage when sufficient water must be ensured, and reduced in the later stage.
(2) Fertilizer requirements: Topdressing should be applied according to growth conditions. When fertilizing, be careful not to apply fertilizer directly under the water bamboo seedlings; keep a distance of 2-3cm from the seedlings to avoid burning the seedlings from overly concentrated fertilizer.
(3) Weeding: During the planting process, weed promptly to improve soil permeability and avoid nutrient consumption; generally weed 2-3 times.
(4) Pest and disease control: The main diseases of water bamboo are leaf blight and rust, and the pests are leafhoppers and aphids; pay attention to control measures.
2. Water bamboo planting time:
China has many water bamboo varieties, mainly divided into two types: single-crop water bamboo and double-crop water bamboo. In southern regions, double-crop water bamboo is generally planted before the end of November-April, or planted from June-August but then only the autumn water bamboo can be harvested; planting should be completed by the end of April or August at the latest. Single-crop water bamboo is generally cultivated in spring, forms shoots under short-day conditions in autumn, and is harvested in the 8th lunar month.
