Sethoxydim is not quite suitable for spraying on foxtail millet, as it has a certain inhibitory effect on the growth of most foxtail millet. If you want to spray foxtail millet, it is best to reduce the dosage, or use other herbicides on foxtail millet.

1. Uses of sethoxydim

A highly selective, systemic, translaminar stem-and-leaf treatment agent that can be rapidly absorbed by the stems and leaves of grass weeds and translocated to the apical and internodal meristems, disrupting cell division and causing death. It can be used on crops such as soybean, cotton, rapeseed, peanut, potato, sugar beet, sunflower and flax, as well as in orchards, to control barnyardgrass, wild oat, green foxtail, shortawn foxtail, crabgrass and goosegrass, but is ineffective against broadleaf weeds. For example, to control weeds in soybean and cotton fields, use 20% emulsifiable concentrate at 10-20 mL/100 sq m and 8-15 mL/100 sq m respectively, diluted with water for spraying, or use 5% machine oil emulsifiable concentrate at 10-15 mL/100 sq m diluted with water for spraying.

2. Production method of sethoxydim

1. Preparation of ETO: using but-2-enal as the raw material, under tertiary amine catalysis, it undergoes addition with ethanethiol to form 3-ethylthiobutanal; methyl acetoacetate is hydrolyzed to form sodium acetoacetate; then 3-ethylthiobutanal is reacted with sodium acetoacetate, with N-methylhexylamine as catalyst, at 20-40°C to form 6-ethylthio-3-hepten-2-one (abbreviated ETO).

2. Preparation of CDNA: in the presence of sodium methoxide, it undergoes Michael addition with dimethyl malonate, then through cyclization, hydrolysis and decarboxylation reactions, yielding 5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-1,3-cyclohexanedione (abbreviated CDNA).

3. Synthesis of sethoxydim: DNA is acylated with butyryl chloride as the acylating agent. Since butyryl chloride is readily hydrolyzed, the reaction should be carried out in an organic solvent, and a phase transfer catalyst is required. The acylation product undergoes rearrangement under the catalysis of 4-N,N-dimethylpyridine. The rearrangement product then undergoes condensation with ethoxyamine under mild conditions at 40-60°C to form an oxime, producing sethoxydim in relatively high yield.

When using the agent, be sure to select it according to the growth conditions of the crop, and be sure to inquire clearly before purchasing the agent, so as to avoid misuse or incorrect application.
