Many people today lead busy lives, yet they still enjoy keeping small animals. Beetles are a very good alternative pet: they take up no space and make no noise. So how do you raise beetles?

1. Preparing the rearing box

Prepare a plastic insect rearing box, spread 3-5 cm of garden soil on the bottom of the box, place some small twigs or wood blocks in the box for the beetles to climb on, and lay some dead leaves on the soil to make the environment look more natural. Placing the rearing box in a cool, ventilated spot already creates a comfortable environment for the beetles, but remember never to put the rearing box somewhere exposed to the sun, because insects have a poor heat-dissipation system and can easily die from high temperatures.

2. Feeding

For beetle food, you can prepare fruits containing sugar and moisture, but be sure to change them frequently, so that the fruit does not turn sour and smell, breeding ants and flies. Alternatively, you can choose the special insect jelly sold in pet stores; besides being convenient, the nutrients in the special jelly can also extend the lifespan of the rhinoceros beetle. Normally, just remember to change the food and spray water to keep the environment moist.

3. Lifespan

The lifespan of adult beetles in the wild is about 1 month, while under artificial rearing conditions they live longer, about 2-3 months.

Raising beetles is relatively simple. They have no odour, and you do not need to clean up, feed and care for them every day. They are a very fascinating pet.
