Akebia is also called “northern white banana”. It is a wild vine fruit with a delicious taste and rich nutrition; its fruit is olive-shaped and splits open when ripe. So how do you grow akebia?

1. Raising seedlings

From September to October of last year, pick some wild fruits, scoop out the pulp and seeds, remove the seeds, and finally rinse the pulp clean with clear water, air-dry and store it, then sow and raise seedlings in mid-March of the following year.

2. Choosing a site and transplanting

Akebia is a light-loving plant, so when choosing a site for planting, priority should be given to a place with fairly abundant sunlight, and the soil should be fertile and loose to facilitate the later growth of akebia. After the land is selected, the soil and fertilizer must be mixed evenly before the seedlings can be planted.

3. Field management

When new shoots appear on the seedlings, a trellis should be set up in time, with a height of 2 m. From April to July each year, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be used for topdressing, and fruit thinning should also be paid attention to. By mid-May, keep only 2 fruits per flower, pinch off the excess fruits, and cut off dead branches.

4. Pest and disease control

Only a small number of mites are harmful to the tender leaves of akebia. To address this situation, boiling tobacco leaves in water can be used for effective control.

The vine stem of akebia has the effect of soothing the liver and regulating qi, and also plays an important role in chest pain and liver-stomach qi disorders.
