How to Grow Five-Angle Maple Seeds? A Detailed Guide to the Planting Method
Five-angle maple generally refers to Acer pictum subsp. mono, also known as five-angle maple, Dijin maple, five-angle maple, and Acer pictum subsp. mono. It is a deciduous tree that can reach up to 20 m in height and is mostly propagated by seed. So how do you grow its seeds? When do you plant them?
Planting time and method for five-angle maple seeds
1. Planting time
Five-angle maple can be sown every year from April to June and from August to October. Seeds sown during these periods have the best germination rate and grow best.
2. Stratification and soil preparation
Select high-quality, plump seeds of the current year, soak them in a 0.5% potassium permanganate solution for 2 hours, then soak them in clean water for 24 hours for stratification treatment. At the same time, prepare the soil and apply fertilizer in a flat, sunny, and fertile spot.
3. Sowing
Sow the treated seeds by the drill method, with a row spacing of 15 cm and a sowing depth of 2-3 cm, at a sowing rate of 225 g-300 g per sq m. After sowing, you can cover with plastic film or finely chopped crop straw.
4. Management
Because five-angle maple is shade-tolerant, water it once every morning and once every evening. After two or three weeks, it will germinate and emerge from the soil. True leaves appear in about three days, and the seedlings will be fully emerged within a week. Usually, thinning can be done twenty days after emergence, and it is best to keep one hundred five-angle maple seedlings per sq m. In addition, fertilizer should be applied two to three times during this period, and weeds should be removed in time to ensure the survival rate of the planting.
Once the five-angle maple is about 10 cm tall, you can thin and finalize the seedlings, and then just do a good job with fertilizing, irrigation, intertillage weeding, and pest and disease control.
