Can banana seeds be planted?
It turns out that wild banana seeds were large and could be planted, but after hybridization and selection, today's bananas have very small seeds and cannot be planted. So nowadays bananas are generally propagated by means of suckers, corms, division and tissue culture. Below is a brief introduction to the specific operation of these propagation methods.
Introduction to banana propagation methods
1. Corm propagation
Corm propagation is mainly a propagation method used to cultivate a large number of sprouts and seedlings in a short period. Using the underground stem of a plant that has not yet flowered and fruited or of a large sucker (sprouting in October-November) as the material, the best time for cutting into pieces is from November to January of the following year; most of them can sprout, and in April, May and June, when the seedlings are 40-50 cm tall, they can be planted.
2. Sucker propagation
Sucker propagation is a relatively traditional propagation method in banana cultivation, mainly using banana sword suckers and maiden suckers for propagation. Sword suckers generally grow in November of the previous year and emerge above the ground after the climate warms following the Beginning of Spring; they are red in color and are generally dug out and planted in spring from March to May. Maiden suckers generally grow in autumn from August to October and temporarily wither during dry and low-temperature periods; they are generally dug out and planted in spring from February to March.
3. Division propagation
Division propagation also uses suckers for propagation. When a sucker grows to more than 40 cm, it can be divided and kept as the mother plant or seedling for the next generation. Division means digging away the soil beside the sucker, using a tool to separate it from the mother plant, and after digging it out, cutting off overly long and damaged roots, smearing it with plant ash, and placing it in a cool place to dry in the shade, after which it can be planted.
4. Tissue culture
It is generally used to cultivate disease-free seedlings and to raise seedlings in large quantities. At present it is relatively widely applied in production. It uses rapid tissue-culture propagation technology, which can not only obtain a large number of seedlings in a short time, but also remove diseases such as mosaic disease, and has an obvious effect on increasing yield.
The several propagation methods above are the propagation methods commonly used in banana cultivation, and you can take them as a reference.
