What are the cultivation methods for O'Neal blueberries?

General News By Sophie Bennett 0 views
O'Neal is a blueberry variety and one of the representative southern highbush blueberry varieties. It is suitable for cultivation in warm temperate to subtropical regions, and is extremely early-maturing and extremely high-yielding. So how do you cultivate O'Neal blueberries? 1. Deep plowing and land preparation. One year before planting, plow deeply together with green manure incorporation, with a depth of 20-25 cm being appropriate. Deep plowing and soil maturation: for soil types that do not meet blueberry requirements, soil improvement should be carried out before planting so that the blueberries can grow normally later.

1. Deep plowing and land preparation

One year before planting, plow deeply together with green manure incorporation, with a depth of 20-25 cm being appropriate. Deep plowing and soil maturation: for soil types that do not meet blueberry requirements, soil improvement should be carried out before planting so that the blueberries can grow normally later.

2. Planting density

The planting depth for one-year-old seedlings is 15-20 cm, and the soil must be firmed by hand and tamped down, following the practice of “three liftings, two tampings, and one lifting of the seedling.” A spacing of 2×2 m or 1.5×3 m is commonly used; highbush blueberry 1.2×2 m; lowbush blueberry (0.5-1)×1 m.

3. Planting pollinizer trees

Blueberries need pollinizer trees to be arranged. Highbush blueberry and lowbush blueberry have relatively high self-fruitfulness, but arranging pollinizer trees can also improve fruit quality and yield. The arrangement method is to plant the main variety and the pollinizer variety in a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio.

4. Fertilizer and water management

Blueberry fertilization is usually carried out before bud break in early spring, and an additional application can also be made according to actual conditions. It is recommended to apply a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer, with ammonium-form nitrogen fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate being preferable. The fertilization amount must be determined according to soil fertility and the nutritional status of the tree. Blueberry roots are relatively shallowly distributed and prefer moist soil, so timely irrigation is needed.

5. Timely harvesting

Blueberry fruit does not ripen uniformly. Generally, the optimal harvest period is about 25 days, and harvesting is usually done once a week. If the fruit is to be eaten fresh, it is best to pick it by hand; if it is to be used for blueberry processing, mechanical harvesting can also be used, which is convenient and quick.

O'Neal blueberries are suitable for planting in most areas of China's Yangtze River Basin, for establishing pick-your-own orchards or orchards supplying the fresh fruit market.
