2. Introduction to the Jiahua No. 1 variety
Jiahua No. 1 is a mid-maturing late japonica rice variety newly bred by the Jiaxing Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Zhejiang Province. In April 2004, it passed the approval of the Zhejiang Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee and is suitable for planting as late japonica rice in northern Zhejiang and areas with similar ecology. In the 2001 and 2002 Jiaxing single-season late japonica rice regional trials, the average yields per mu were 582.4 kg and 589.6 kg respectively, and the two-year average whole growth period was 158 days; in the 2003 Jiaxing production trial, the average yield per mu was 523.9 kg.
Jiahua No. 1 is a semi-dwarf, dense-panicle rice variety, with a plant height of about 90 cm, thick stems, a compact plant type, tolerance to fertilizer and resistance to lodging, medium tillering ability, large panicles with many grains, a high seed-setting rate, and a clean and attractive appearance in the later stage. In the regional trials, the average effective panicles per mu were 221,000, the total number of grains per panicle was 124, and the 1000-grain weight was 25.8 g. In 2002, according to identification by the Institute of Plant Protection of the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the average leaf blast rating was 1, the average panicle blast rating was 3, the panicle blast loss rate was 5.6%, and the average bacterial blight rating was 7. The appearance of the grain is crystal clear and translucent, and the cooking and eating quality is good. According to testing, 9 of the 12 quality indicators reached the Ministry-issued first-grade high-quality rice standard.
