How to Grow Lotus Seeds? Detailed Planting Methods Shared
Lotus seeds are the seeds of the lotus, an aquatic herbaceous plant in the water lily family. Many friends do not know how to grow lotus seeds, so let us learn about it together below.
1. Sowing time
Lotus seeds do not have a specific dormant period. As long as the temperature can be kept above 16°C when sowing, they can be sown in all four seasons of the year. If the light and temperature are suitable, from sowing to flowering usually takes 50 to 60 days in spring and 60 to 80 days in autumn.
2. Treating the seeds
The outer shell of lotus seeds is very hard. Before soaking the seeds, first use pliers to crack the end of the lotus seed with the small dent, or rub a small opening in it on the ground.
3. Soaking seeds to promote germination
Put the seeds in a container filled with water to soak. During soaking, keep them in a warm environment. They will sprout in about 1 week, and after 2 weeks they will grow fine roots and tender leaves.
4. Transplanting the seedlings
Prepare a flowerpot without a drainage hole, add half a pot of river mud, add water in advance to soak it, and press the roots of the germinated lotus seeds into the river mud.
5. Scientific fertilization
Lotus seeds have a long growth period and consume a large amount of fertilizer, while the root system of lotus seeds has a weak ability to absorb fertilizer. Fertilization should emphasize applying sufficient organic fertilizer, increasing phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, applying topdressing in small amounts and more frequently, and appropriately supplementing micronutrients. For field topdressing of lotus seeds, the total fertilizer used per mu is equivalent to about 40 kg of urea, 20 kg of potassium chloride, and 2.5 kg of borax. When fertilizing, grasp the principle of “light seedling fertilizer, heavy flower fertilizer, complete seed fertilizer” and apply it in stages and multiple times.
