When to sow potted tomatoes?
Sowing seeds of potted tomatoes is generally more suitable in the three seasons of spring, autumn and winter. Spring is generally from February to May, autumn is generally from July to September, and winter is generally around November.
How to care for potted tomatoes?
1. Raising seedlings
First, choose good cultivation nutrient soil and put it into the flowerpot. The soil formula can be prepared by mixing 3/5 garden soil, 1/5 peat soil and 1/5 humus soil, plus a small amount of coarse sand. Before sowing, first germinate the seeds and then take them out for sowing. Sow one seed at a row spacing of about 15-20 cm. After sowing, water thoroughly and cover the flowerpot with a layer of dry grass.
2. Water and fertilizer
Water tomatoes once before planting, thoroughly, and then water once every 3-6 days. After fruiting, keep the soil moist. After potting, apply fertilizer water once every 10 days, and apply well-rotted organic fertilizer before flowering.
3. Pruning side shoots and pinching tips
The buds (branches) that appear from the base of the leaves and stems, and the side branches extending one by one from the main branch, are all targets that need to be "pruned." Removing side buds will make the fruit grow larger, and together with good sunlight and ventilation, it can also effectively prevent the occurrence of diseases and pests.
Pruning tomatoes cannot be done arbitrarily. Generally, the first side shoot below the first truss of flowers should be removed as early as possible; while the other side shoots below the first side shoot can be removed later, because they can play a role in nourishing and protecting the roots. We can remove these side shoots when the plant reaches 10-15 cm. And the shoots above the first truss of flowers should be removed as early as possible.
