Radish, as one of the world's ancient cultivated crops, is also grown across a very wide area worldwide. Its root can be eaten as a vegetable, its seeds can be pressed for oil, and its leaves and roots can be used as medicine, giving it high utility value. So how can it be grown for high yields?

How to grow radishes for high yields?

1. Choosing and preparing the land

Choose a plot of sandy loam with gentle terrain, good sunlight, rich organic matter, deep soil, fertile and loose soil texture, and convenient drainage and irrigation. Plow deeply and turn the soil several times, break up clods and rake it level. The plowing depth should be 26-40cm, and adopt the method of deep furrows and high beds. Then, apply 2000-3000kg of high-quality decomposed organic fertilizer and 40kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per mu (the specific fertilization amount should be determined according to the actual conditions of the planting site)

2. Sowing

Radishes can be sown from mid-February to early April and from mid-to-late July to early October, but sowing in September is best. When sowing, choose broadcasting, drilling, or hole sowing according to the situation. After sowing, cover with culture soil, then water.

3. Thinning and final thinning

Thinning of radishes is carried out after true leaves appear, while final thinning is carried out when the seedlings grow to 6-7 true leaves. During thinning and final thinning, be careful not to injure the seedlings or cause them to bend.

4. Fertilizer and water management

Radishes are not drought-tolerant, so the number of waterings and the amount of water each time should be determined according to conditions such as the amount of rainfall and the height of the groundwater table, and should also be flexibly managed according to the different growth and development stages of radishes. After sufficient basal fertilizer is applied to radishes, generally during the growing period fertilizer only needs to be applied after the seedling-stressing stage ends and during the rapid expansion stage of the fleshy root, with the amount determined according to specific conditions.

5. Pest and disease control

The main diseases of radishes include soft rot, black rot, and mosaic virus disease, as well as aphids, cabbage webworms, cabbage caterpillars, and diamondback moths. Growers should take preventive measures in advance and spray pesticides according to different situations.

In addition, from the seedling stage until the rows close, radishes generally need to be cultivated once, and weeds should be removed and the soil loosened according to actual conditions.
