Podocarpus, also known as Luohan pine, Changqing Luohan pine, Tu pine, golden larch, Xian cypress, Luohan cypress, and Jiangnan cypress, is an evergreen tree that can be grown as a potted plant. It can be propagated by sowing seeds. Below is an introduction to how to grow podocarpus seeds.

How do you grow podocarpus?

1. Timing

Podocarpus seeds can be sown in spring or autumn. The best time for spring sowing is from February to May, and the best time for autumn sowing is from August to October. However, temperatures vary from region to region, and growth also differs, so it is quite normal for some to sow early and others to sow late. Therefore, please determine the specific sowing time according to your particular situation.

2. Seed Selection and Germination

Choose plump, fresh green seeds of superior quality. Note that shriveled seeds and diseased, yellowed, withered seeds must not be used. Then soak the seeds in warm water for about 4 days to let them absorb water and swell, which helps soften the seeds and prompt germination.

3. Site Selection and Soil Preparation

Podocarpus has good adaptability, and its seeds do not have high soil requirements. But it is best to choose deep, fertile soil. Before sowing, the seedbed should also be turned over once to make the soil particles uniform and loose, which allows the seeds to grow better.

4. Sowing and Transplanting

Sow the treated seeds at a row spacing of 20*10 cm, with the depth just enough to cover the seeds. After sowing, cover them with grass, then water once a day. After 8-9 days from sowing, remove the grass cover and do a good job of sun protection and shading. Transplanting is best done in spring from March to April. Small seedlings need to be moved with soil, and large seedlings with a soil ball. In the hot summer season, keep them in a semi-shaded place for care. In winter, pay attention to cold protection.

After transplanting is completed, you can carry out routine care for the podocarpus seedlings, including watering, fertilizing, and so on.
