Placing a houseplant at home not only greens up the environment but also lifts your mood. Making houseplants is easy these days, and sometimes you can just gather materials yourself to create a small houseplant. The sweet potatoes you love to eat can also be a DIY project. How do you grow a sweet potato houseplant?

How do you grow a sweet potato houseplant

A sweet potato houseplant can be grown in water or in soil; you can choose how to plant it according to your own preference.

1. Water-grown houseplant

For a sweet potato grown in water, we can choose a vase or other shaped container whose neck can hold the sweet potato according to its size, pour a certain amount of water into the bottle, and make sure that after the sweet potato is lodged in place, half is submerged in the water and half is in the air. Wash the sweet potato first; if it has already sprouted, simply point the sprouted part toward the air opening; if the sweet potato is intact, find the bud eye and position it accordingly.

After 4-5 days the sweet potato shoots will grow out, and in about 2-3 weeks the sweet potato shoots will grow into long sweet potato vines, which we can prune.

A water-grown sweet potato houseplant needs to have its water changed regularly, once every 1-2 weeks. The amount of water should not be too much. If you find that the sweet potato is rotting, cut off the rotting part promptly; if the rotting area is too large, then you can only make a new houseplant.

2. Soil-grown houseplant

To grow sweet potatoes in soil, you need to choose a flowerpot with a wide mouth and a moderate size. For the potting soil, you can use loose, well-aerated sandy soil. Larger sweet potatoes can be cut into pieces before planting, while small sweet potatoes can be planted directly. For the cut sweet potato pieces, to make the houseplant look denser, you can plant 2-3 pieces in one pot.

After planting the sweet potatoes, water them a little and place them in a cool, airy spot that also receives scattered light, and wait for them to sprout. After a few days the sweet potato shoots will grow out. After that, water the houseplant regularly to keep the soil moist, and at the same time give it a set amount of sunlight to ensure good growth.

Growing a sweet potato houseplant is relatively simple, and the materials are easy to obtain. Friends who are interested can make one themselves.
