Passion fruit is also called baixiangguo (passion fruit), and it can be eaten directly or made into an aromatic and delicious beverage. Passion fruit has the reputation of “king of fruit juice.” Many people grow passion fruit. So how do you grow passion fruit?

1. Temperature

The most suitable growth temperature for passion fruit is 20°C to 30°C. It generally grows well at temperatures not lower than 0°C. At -2°C, the plant will be severely damaged or even die. Areas with an annual average temperature above 18°C are most suitable for planting and can easily achieve a high yield. Therefore, it is especially widely distributed in the warm and humid regions of southern China, particularly Hainan.

2. Water

Passion fruit grows best under conditions with annual rainfall of 1500 to 2000 mm distributed evenly, while areas developed for commercial planting should not receive less than 1 000 mm. Passion fruit is relatively drought tolerant, but in the event of drought, irrigation is still needed. If the soil is too dry, it will affect vine and fruit development. In severe cases, the branches will appear withered, the fruit will not develop, and fruit drop will occur. During the rainy season, pay attention to drainage.

3. Light

As a tropical fruit, passion fruit likes sufficient sunlight to promote vine growth and nutrient accumulation. Long-day conditions are conducive to flowering in passion fruit. In areas with 2300 to 2800 annual sunshine hours, passion fruit has good vegetative growth, more nutrient accumulation, fast vine growth, early fruiting, and high yield. The most suitable growth temperature is 20°C to 30°C. It generally grows well at temperatures not lower than 0°C. At -2°C, the plant will be severely damaged or even die.

4. Soil

Passion fruit has strong adaptability and does not have high soil requirements. However, for large-scale production, the soil layer should be at least 0.5 m deep, and the soil should be fertile, loose, and well drained, with a suitable soil pH of 5.5 to 6.5.

Passion fruit is widely cultivated in Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, Yunnan, Taiwan, China, and other regions, and is suitable for planting in tropical and subtropical regions.
