How to Raise Turkeys? Detailed Explanation of Breeding Methods and Technical Key Points
Thanksgiving has the traditional custom of eating turkey, which was introduced from Western countries, and now many farmers have also begun to raise turkeys. So how do you raise turkeys?
1. Seed selection
Currently there are not many turkey breeds in our country. High-quality breed turkeys are generally in the hands of large-scale farmers, while the turkeys in the hands of ordinary small-scale raisers are, to be honest, average. So if you are buying, it is recommended to look for a somewhat well-known farm, as there will be more guarantees and the price will also be a bit cheaper. Second, for friends who want to breed them themselves, it is even less recommended to buy from small-scale raisers, because the genetic stability is too poor, and the offspring generally bred are not ideal. For seed selection, the larger the wattle under the turkey, the better, and seedlings with a bright red color, as if blood-colored, are best.
2. Site management
The feathers all over a turkey's body are much thicker than those of ordinary chickens, which makes them very prone to parasites and the like, especially in humid environments. So the chicken house generally needs to maintain a dry environment with smooth ventilation. Avoid direct sunlight shining into the chicken house, yet still keep the chicken house bright. For the chicken cages, it is generally recommended to use wire mesh to separate them from the ground for easy cleaning. The overall height should be kept at about 4 m, which is beneficial for oxygen supply. The windows are generally at a height of 1.5 m, to facilitate air circulation into the chicken cages.
3. Feeding management
To a certain extent, turkeys have a certain carnivorous nature and are rather fierce. There are also differences in fattening them. In addition to normal feed feeding, fish meal is an indispensable part of turkey feed. Of course, for a better fattening effect, everyone can also buy some wild forage that helps with gaining meat. In some places, some heads are also crushed into granules and mixed with feed for feeding. The advantage of this is ensuring the health and vitality of the turkeys.
4. Daily management
In daily management, you must often inspect the chicken house. Turkeys like to fight a lot, and everyone should separate them in time. The next thing is hygiene management, because a dirty and messy environment very easily causes turkeys to be infected with pathogens and parasites. The ground generally needs to be rinsed with clean water, and after rinsing it is recommended to use a fan to dry it, so as to maintain overall dryness. Finally, some things like vitamins should be added to the feed from time to time to avoid damage to the chickens' feet.
Turkeys are relatively large poultry, and their size is also a bit larger than ordinary chickens. At present, relatively few people raise them in the country, and farmers with the conditions can give it a try.
