Red cabbage sprout, also called purple cabbage sprout, is a variety of the Chinese cabbage subspecies, and the dishes made from it are crisp, refreshing and smooth. How is red cabbage sprout grown? Let us take a simple look together.

Red cabbage sprout cultivation techniques

1. Site selection and land preparation

The most suitable land for planting red cabbage sprout is fairly fertile sandy soil, but at the same time it must have strong water retention and drainage capacity. It is generally chosen in areas with relatively abundant water sources. For land preparation, it is generally done as early as possible, then the land is left to be sunned for about ten days. Before sowing, the land is loosened slightly, and then sufficient fertilizer is spread. Generally, about 500 kg of farmyard manure and 200 kg of compound fertilizer are needed per mu.

2. Sowing and raising seedlings

For seed selection, varieties with relatively strong resistance are generally chosen. When sowing, first water the seedbed once, then scatter the seeds densely over the seedbed, and then cover them with a thin layer of soil. At the same time, a layer of dry grass or animal manure can also be placed on top, which can raise the soil temperature and let the seeds sprout faster. After the seeds send out tender shoots, water once to give them sufficient moisture so they can develop faster.

3. Planting method

When the red cabbage sprout seedlings grow four or five leaves, they can be transplanted. We pull the seedlings from the seedbed, and then plant them in the prepared land at a spacing of 30 to 40 cm per plant. Keeping this spacing allows the red cabbage sprout to grow larger, and the more red cabbage sprouts it will produce when the time comes.

4. Field management

After transplanting, remember to water them. Newly transplanted seedlings are relatively fragile and need sufficient nutrients and water to promote the growth of new roots and new leaves, so about ten days after transplanting, fertilize them once. Generally urea is used, because urea mainly promotes the growth of branches and leaves, and the effect is very obvious. Generally, leafy vegetables all use urea. During the growth period of red cabbage sprout, the soil must be kept moist. If there is no rain, water regularly, generally once every five to seven days. Because red cabbage sprout can be continuously harvested and grown during its growth period, soil fertility must be maintained, and generally three to four topdressings are needed. Basically, after each harvest, a little urea and potassium chloride can be applied as a topdressing.

5. Pest and disease control

During the growth of the rosette leaves of red cabbage sprout, the most commonly occurring disease is downy mildew, a disease that many vegetables often get, so the treatment method is the same as for other vegetables: spray two or three times with a pesticide targeting downy mildew. Finally, red cabbage sprout often has some pests, such as diamondback moth and aphids. These can be treated with common pesticides. Once a disease or pest is found, it must be treated promptly.

6. Harvesting method

Red cabbage sprout is harvested in batches. The red cabbage sprouts it produces each time grow at different speeds, so when the cabbage sprouts grow to about 30 to 40 cm, they can be harvested. After harvesting, an appropriate amount of fertilizer can be added to promote the growth of the cabbage sprouts. Basically, they can be harvested once or twice a week. Be sure to harvest promptly, otherwise if they grow too long they will become hard.

The planting method for red cabbage sprout is easy to get started with and operate. This is mainly a brief introduction, and we hope it has some reference value for everyone.
