Detailed Explanation of the Key Cultivation Techniques for Crispy Kumquat
Crispy kumquat is a superior new variety of the Fortunella genus selected and bred from common kumquat, with smooth peel and a refreshingly sweet taste, so what are the crispy kumquat cultivation techniques?
1. Basic Introduction to Crispy Kumquat
As a superior new Fortunella variety selected and bred from common kumquat, crispy kumquat has the advantages of early fruiting, high and stable yield, wide adaptability and strong stress resistance, and in particular shows strong resistance to citrus huanglongbing.
Kumquat is a subtropical to temperate fruit, relatively cold-tolerant and heat-tolerant, with strong drought resistance and disease resistance. It can generally be planted wherever citrus can be grown, but the best soil is deep, rich in organic matter, loose and breathable, and slightly acidic to neutral clay soil.
2. Crispy Kumquat Cultivation Techniques
1. Site selection
Choose slightly acidic or neutral sandy soil with deep soil layers and rich organic matter for planting.
2. Planting
Plant at a certain density, and apply sufficient base fertilizer before planting.
On sloping land, dig planting holes or trenches with a length, width and depth of 70cm, 70cm and 60cm respectively according to the plant and row spacing. Apply 0.5kg of lime, 10~30kg of turf or weeds, 10~20kg of decomposed organic fertilizer, 0.5kg of phosphate fertilizer and 0.5kg of organic active fertilizer per hole, filling in layers with turf or weeds, lime, topsoil, organic fertilizer, phosphate fertilizer, active fertilizer and subsoil, and after filling the hole, pile it 25~30cm above the ground surface. For flat land and paddy field planting, dig trenches according to the row spacing, with a trench width of 70cm and a depth of 50cm, or after deep ploughing and harrowing, build high beds for planting and apply sufficient base fertilizer.
3. Pruning
Pruning is also needed during the growth of the fruit tree, so that crispy kumquat can grow better.
For mature trees, focus on cultivating moderately vigorous and well-filled spring shoots as fruiting mother branches; moderately vigorous, obliquely growing
spring shoots have a high fruit-setting rate. The pruning time is best about 20 days before budding (that is, early March); pruning too early affects the storage of nutrients in the tree, while too late delays budding.
4. Other management
Watering and fertilization management also need to be done well.
1. Apply sufficient base fertilizer before winter, with 10kg of biological organic fertilizer per plant.
2. Orchards with vigorous tree growth and dark green leaves may not need fertilization. Trees with medium or weak vigor should be fertilized 10~15 days before spring shoot budding (mid-March), applying 10~20kg of decomposed manure water or biogas slurry, 0.2kg of urea or 0.3kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per plant. For those kept fresh on the tree, compound fertilizer should be added when the base fertilizer is applied.
3. For young trees, after the first flowering and fruit setting, if the fruit load is large, the tree vigor turns weak and the leaves fade in color, quick-acting fertilizer should be applied in time, with 0.25~0.5kg of multi-element compound fertilizer per plant or drenching with diluted manure water, biogas slurry, etc. If the first crop of fruit is small, and summer shoots should be promoted to bear a second crop of fruit, fertilizer should also be applied in time.
4. Water reasonably according to the growth of the kumquat.
