Eggplant is one of the common vegetables in everyday life. Because its flavor and texture are both quite good and it has high nutritional value, market demand for it is relatively large. In recent years, many farmers have chosen eggplant as their main vegetable crop and have also achieved relatively good returns. Once eggplant is attacked by pests and diseases, it has a very large impact on the yield and quality during the fruiting stage. So what are the common eggplant pests and diseases? What are the control measures?

1. What are the common eggplant pests and diseases?

Eggplant diseases mainly include damping-off, brown spot disease, Fusarium wilt, Phytophthora fruit rot, bacterial wilt, and Verticillium wilt. Eggplant pests mainly include aphids, mites, thrips, eggplant borers, eggplant ladybird beetles (Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata), and red spider mites.

1. Damping-off

It occurs at the seedling stage. The base of the seedling near the soil surface becomes water-soaked, then shrinks into a thread-like shape; the cotyledons have not yet wilted, but the seedling has already toppled onto the ground.

2. Fusarium wilt

In eggplant plants affected by Fusarium wilt, the leaves gradually turn yellow and wilt from the bottom upward. Symptoms mostly appear on the first and second layers of branches; sometimes only half of a single leaf turns yellow while the other half remains healthy as usual. When the diseased stem is cut crosswise, the vascular bundles in the diseased area appear brown.

3. Brown spot disease

Leaf lesions begin as small water-soaked spots and gradually develop into brown concentric rings, with small black dots forming on the grayish-white edges. Stem lesions are diamond-shaped, and fruit lesions also bear concentric rings of small black dots; the diseased areas change from yellow to brown.

4. Phytophthora fruit rot

It occurs under conditions of high humidity. After the fruit is affected, water-soaked round lesions appear, then turn brown and sunken; sometimes dense cottony white mold grows on them, and finally the fruit rots and drops off.

5. Aphids

If aphids attack eggplant, the leaves turn yellow, shrink, and curl. After the tender stems and flower stalks are damaged, they become bent and deformed, and growth and flowering are inhibited; in severe cases, the plant wilts and dies.

2. What are the control measures for common eggplant pests and diseases?

1. Select disease-resistant varieties; sow at the proper time, strengthen fertilizer and water management, and enhance plant vigor; promptly control damage from aphids, thrips, whiteflies, and the like.

2. Choose high-lying land for planting, maintain a reasonable planting density, and irrigate appropriately; drain promptly after rain to maintain ventilation and air permeability; promptly control aphids and whiteflies.

3. Apply more organic fertilizer, potassium fertilizer, and phosphorus fertilizer to increase plant vigor; promptly remove spent flowers and diseased fruit and bury them deeply or burn them in a centralized manner; covering with plastic film can prevent the pathogen's apothecia from emerging from the soil.

4. Disinfect seeds before sowing: soak seeds in warm water at 55°C for 15 minutes, then place them in cold water to cool before germination. Alternatively, mix 1 part each of 50% benomyl wettable powder + 50% thiram wettable powder with 3 parts fine soil, and after mixing evenly, dress the seeds with the mixture at 0.3% of seed weight.

Before sowing, soak seeds in warm water at 55°C for 15 minutes or at 52°C for 30 minutes, then place them in cold water to cool before germination.

5. Do a good job of field management, promptly remove spent flowers and diseased fruit, and bury them deeply or burn them in a centralized manner.

The above is the answer to the questions of what the common eggplant pests and diseases are and what the control measures are. We hope it is helpful to you.
