How many banana plants can be planted per mu of land, and when is the best time to plant them?
Bananas are one of the common fruits in our daily lives, and banana trees are also cultivated in Hainan, Taiwan, China, Guangdong, Guangxi and other places in our country. So do you know how many banana plants can be planted per mu of land? When is the best time to plant them?
How many banana plants can be planted per mu of land?
The number of banana trees to plant varies depending on the situation, for example:
1. Paddy field
Paddy fields use trench planting, which requires deep plowing of the soil followed by forming beds, with two rows per bed, a trench depth of 0.5 m and width of 0.3 m between each bed, and a bed length of 100 m. Two levels of drainage ditches are set up to facilitate irrigation in the dry season and drainage in the rainy season. The planting spacing follows a wide-and-narrow row pattern of 1.7×2.2 m, with 176 plants planted per mu;
2. Dry land
Dry land uses the pit-and-pond planting method, with a planting spacing of 1.7×2.6 m in a wide-and-narrow row pattern, planting 150 plants per mu.
3. Height
For a plant height of 1.5 m, about 220 plants can be planted per 667 sq m; for a plant height of 1.8 m, about 190 plants; for a plant height of 2.0 m, 160 plants; for a plant height of 2.2 m, 145 plants; for a plant height of 2.5 m, 132 plants; for a plant height of 2.8 m, 122 plants; for a plant height of 3.2 m, 115 plants; for a plant height of 3.6 m, 108 plants; for a plant height of 4 m, 100 plants.
Therefore, the planting density of bananas is related to factors such as the planting site conditions, plant height, variety, and terrain. When planting, everyone must fully consider these factors before deciding.
When is the best time to plant bananas?
1. Spring planting
Spring planting is generally done in February-March (between the Start of Spring and Qingming). Bananas planted then can mature and be harvested from the end of that year to the beginning of the following year. In addition, spring planting should not be too late; in February-March, large bagged tissue-cultured seedlings or large sucker shoots should be selected for planting. At this time, the temperature begins to rise and the rain gradually increases, so after planting the survival rate is high and growth is rapid. With favorable weather and good fertilizer and water management, the flower stalk can emerge in August-September of that year, and harvesting can be done around the Start of Spring of the following year. However, in areas with lower winter temperatures, spring planting should not be too early, to avoid encountering cold spells.
2. Autumn planting
Autumn planting is generally done in September-October (around the Autumn Equinox), with bananas harvested in November-December of the following year. If the temperature rises quickly in the following spring, the bananas can be harvested in September-October. Because planting too early or too late is unfavorable to the growth of banana seedlings: if planted in the hot season of July, the survival rate of banana seedlings is not high; if planted after October, because the temperature gradually decreases, root growth is slow and the stress resistance of the seedlings is weak. If low-temperature and dry weather occurs, they are prone to cold damage. Therefore, during this period, small arched sheds about 1.0 m high need to be built over the banana seedling planting rows, covered with plastic film to keep warm and prevent freezing.
In addition to good management techniques, planting time and planting density are also very important when growing bananas. Everyone must remember this well.
