Gesang flowers are symbolic plants of Tibetan culture, and many of the Gesang flowers in Tibetan magazines and films are cosmos. So are cosmos and Gesang flowers the same flower? If not, when are the flowering periods of cosmos and Gesang flowers?

1. What is cosmos?

The scientific name of cosmos is Cosmos bipinnatus. It is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family and the genus Cosmos. The plant is generally 1-2 m tall and often grows along roadsides, field ridges, stream banks and other places at altitudes up to 2700 m and below.

Cosmos likes warmth and a sunny environment. It is drought-tolerant, dislikes waterlogging and is not cold-tolerant. It is suitable for planting in fertile, loose and well-drained soil. Its main propagation methods are sowing and cuttings.

Among them:

1. Sowing

Carry it out outdoors in April-May, covering with about 2 cm of soil. Seedlings can emerge more than 10 days after sowing. The suitable germination temperature is 20°C. When the seedlings grow to 5 cm and have 5-6 true leaves, they can be transplanted into pots or into open ground, with a spacing of 30-50 cm when planted in the ground. Cosmos has strong self-seeding ability; scattered seeds will germinate and emerge on their own, and they can also be transplanted.

2. Cuttings

It is best done in early summer or August-September. Cut 7-10 cm from the top of the branches and insert them into a prepared seedbed, water and shade them, and they will take root in about 2 weeks.

2. Are cosmos and Gesang flowers the same flower?

Strictly speaking, cosmos and Gesang flowers are not the same plant, but there is still a certain relationship between them.

As a symbolic plant of Tibetan culture (symbolizing beauty and happiness), Gesang flower is not a specific kind of flower. One saying is that Gesang flowers refer to the wildflowers with the strongest vitality on the plateau, so plants of the Asteraceae family and the genus Aster, China aster, alpine rhododendron, snow lotus and others could all possibly be Gesang flowers.

Cosmos, however, is only a herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family. In other words, cosmos may be a Gesang flower, but Gesang flower does not necessarily refer to cosmos.

3. When are the flowering periods of cosmos and Gesang flowers?

Because the flower varieties that may be Gesang flowers include plants of the genus Aster, China aster, cosmos, alpine rhododendron, snow lotus and others, different flowers also have different flowering periods. Among them:

1. The flowering period of plants in the Asteraceae family and the genus Aster is May-September each year, and the fruiting period is August-October;

2. The flowering period of China aster is May-October each year, and it is mainly distributed in Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Yunnan and Sichuan Province, China, and other places;

3. The flowering period of cosmos is June-August each year, and it can bloom twice a year;

4. The flowering period of alpine rhododendron is May-July each year, and it is an evergreen small shrub;

5. The flowering period of snow lotus is July to early August each year. Because its top resembles a lotus flower, it is named snow lotus flower, or snow lotus for short.

I believe that through this article everyone has gained a certain understanding of Gesang flowers and cosmos. If you like cosmos flowers, you can try growing them. Cosmos is also a relatively easy flower to grow.
