Cosmos is a brightly colored flower available in many colors, often used in lawns, around trees, and as roadside greenery, and it can also be used for indoor greening. So when should cosmos be sown? If you want to grow cosmos, what are the planting methods?

1. Basic Introduction to Cosmos

Cosmos is a plant in the genus Cosmos of the Asteraceae family, native to Mexico in the Americas. It is an annual or perennial herb, and it is grown in many regions of China, with large-scale planting in Yunnan and Sichuan.

Cosmos is an ornamental flower, mainly used for landscaping in parks, gardens, lawn edges, roadsides, and near residential communities. It can also be used as medicine, with effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, improving eyesight, and resolving dampness.

2. When Should Cosmos Be Sown?

Cosmos is generally sown in April each year, but because climate conditions vary by region, the sowing time is not completely the same, and the planting time needs to be adjusted according to climate and temperature.

The suitable germination temperature for cosmos is 15°C-20°C, so during the cosmos growing period, as long as the temperature is within this range, sowing is generally possible.

After sowing, if the temperature suddenly drops or rises, measures for insulation or cooling should also be taken promptly, so that the seeds do not die before germinating.

If you are worried that sowing may make it difficult for the seeds to germinate, you can also grow cosmos by cuttings. Cuttings are generally taken in early summer or in August-September. The specific operation is: cut 7-10 cm from the top of a branch, insert it into a prepared seedbed, water it and provide shade, and it will take root in about 2 weeks.

3. What Are the Planting Methods for Cosmos?

1. Transplanting

After successfully propagating cosmos by sowing or cuttings, the seedlings can be transplanted once they have grown for a period of time (with 4-5 true leaves). A suitable base fertilizer can be applied before transplanting.

2. Pinching

If cosmos grows too quickly and only grows taller without branching, pinching can be carried out. Generally, more dwarf plants are cultivated, that is, when the seedlings are 20-30 cm tall, the tops are removed, and then the new terminal buds are removed several more times in succession. In this way, the number of flowers that bloom later will be greater, and the plants will be less likely to lodge.

3. Other Management

During the cosmos growing period, watering, light, and fertilizing management also need to be done well, so that cosmos can grow better. Among these:

Light: Cosmos likes light and is drought-tolerant. It can be planted in an area with sufficient scattered light, and attention should also be paid to sun protection when the weather is hot in summer;

Fertilizing and watering: For cosmos, fertilizing is generally done once every 10 days during the growing period with decomposed urine diluted 5 times with water, and when the weather is dry, water 2-3 times.

In addition to sowing at the right time, later management is also very important when growing cosmos. Only with careful care can you grow beautiful cosmos.
