A Detailed Guide to Fennel Planting Methods and Management Key Points
Fennel is a perennial herbaceous plant with a distinctive aroma, and it is grown in Inner Mongolia, Shanxi and other places in China. So what are fennel planting methods?
1. Basic Introduction to Fennel
The scientific name of fennel is fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), also called fragrant silk vegetable, fennel seed, grain fragrance, hunxiang, etc. The stems and tender leaves of fennel can be used as a vegetable, and the seasoning fennel is the dried mature fruit of the fennel plant.
Fennel originated in the Mediterranean region and is cultivated in all provinces and regions of China. Its flowers are white or bluish-white, with 5 to 7 single flowers. The schizocarp is oblong-ovate, 5 to 8 mm long and 2 to 3 mm wide, containing two slightly yellow seeds.
2. Fennel Planting Methods
1. Site selection
It is necessary to choose loose and fertile sandy soil for planting. Before planting, farmyard manure can be applied as base fertilizer.
After choosing the planting site, the soil also needs to be turned. The soil can be plowed to a depth of 20 cm. Compound fertilizer or farmyard manure can be used as base fertilizer, and 40 jin of phosphate fertilizer and 15 jin of potassium fertilizer should be added, which will make the soil more fertile.
2. Sowing
Choose a suitable fennel variety according to the local climate, then sprout the seeds, and sow after sprouting is complete.
The specific operation for sprouting is to soak the selected variety in water for sprouting, keeping the temperature at about 25 degrees, so that the seeds can germinate and be planted.
Dig small furrows 5 cm deep in the soil, scatter the seeds into the soil, then cover with 2 cm of soil, and then water. Keep the soil moist so that the seeds can germinate. And when the seedlings grow to a height of 5 or 6 cm, thinning can be carried out. In particular, the furrows must not be too deep, otherwise it will be difficult for the seeds to germinate. Also, the covering soil should not be too thick; 1 to 2 cm is enough, otherwise too thick a cover will also affect seed germination.
3. Transplanting
Once the seeds germinate and grow to an appropriate degree, they can be transplanted. When transplanting, it is best to transplant with soil.
4. Other management
During the growth of fennel, management such as weeding, watering and topdressing is also needed.
Clearing weeds can allow the seedlings to ventilate and breathe, and grow more luxuriantly. Weeds are also the chief culprit in breeding diseases and insect pests.
In addition, check the growth of the seedlings in time. If there are seedlings with poor growth and inflammation, pull them out in time, otherwise they will bring bacteria and diseases and affect the growth of other seedlings.
In the middle stage of fennel growth, fennel should be fertilized and watered. During the growth process, fertilizer should basically be applied three times, and the amount of fertilizer can gradually increase each time. The amount of watering should be controlled freely according to the moisture in the field. If it is the rainy season and the field is relatively wet, watering should be reduced, otherwise the seedlings will rot and die, affecting the yield.
