Catnip is a plant, also called camphor grass, and it is called catnip because cats have a special reaction after smelling it. Catnip is also a traditional Chinese medicine, mainly used to dispel wind and promote sweating, reduce fever, promote rash eruption, and stop bleeding. The effect of catnip comes from a terpene substance it contains, called nepetalactone. Today the editor will teach you the catnip seed planting method, let's take a look.

Catnip Seed Planting Method

1. Sowing

Catnip can be sown directly from seed, with 1-3 seeds per hole. After sowing, the seeds can be covered with vermiculite. If the temperature is between 18-22 degrees, they can sprout in 10-14 days. After sowing, direct sunlight should be avoided, and they should be placed in a shaded spot.

2. Germination

You can prepare a tray, put soil in the tray, then place the seeds in the tray and spray some water evenly. Then put the tray in an incubator, set the incubator to 25 degrees, and after 24 to 30 hours of constant-temperature cultivation, the catnip can sprout.

3. Soil

Catnip is suitable for planting in well-drained soil. Fertilization can be moderate; some slow-release fertilizer can be applied as appropriate, and then a thin liquid fertilizer should be applied once or twice a week. Catnip is recommended to be planted in a flowerpot of moderate size. The flowerpot should not be too small; if the flowerpot is too small, it will affect its growth. The soil mix is one third humus soil and two thirds garden soil.

4. Watering

In summer, when the temperature is high, water every day. Mint is relatively fond of moisture. In winter, water should be controlled. The suitable temperature for seed germination is 15-20℃, and the lifespan of the seeds is generally 1 year. The root system is relatively sensitive to moisture, so waterlogging should be prevented. Between two waterings, the pot soil should be allowed to dry out completely.

Precautions:

Cat grass can be planted in both northern and southern parts of our country, because it does not have strict requirements for climate, soil, and so on. It likes to grow in a warm, humid climate. Seedlings tolerate low temperatures, but if the temperature is lower than -2℃, frost damage will occur. It is averse to drought and water accumulation, and averse to continuous cropping. The suitable temperature for seed germination is 15-20℃, and the seed lifespan is 1 year, so sowing should be carried out within one year after purchasing the seeds.
