When do akebia fruits ripen? Introduction to the ripening period and harvest time
Akebia fruit is a fruit that grows in the wild, but as its nutritional value has become widely recognized, it is now cultivated artificially in some places. So, when do akebia fruits ripen? How are they grown?
1. When do akebia fruits ripen?
Akebia fruits grown from seed generally ripen in September-October. Pick the akebia fruit, eat the flesh, and keep the seeds for timely autumn sowing. If the akebia fruit is not fully ripe, it can be ripened artificially: use a relatively large plastic bag, put 1-2 ripe bananas into the bag, then add the akebia fruit, tie the bag tightly, and place it in a dark place away from sunlight; this will ripen the akebia fruit relatively quickly.
2. How to grow akebia fruit
Akebia fruit is generally propagated by the following methods.
1. Seed propagation
Seed propagation is simple and easy, but the seedlings produced bear fruit late, generally only after 3 years. It is generally not used in production.
2. Layering propagation
The vines and stems of akebia fruit have strong sprouting ability. Select 1-2 year old branches and vines and bury them in the soil; they will root after 1 month, and propagation can be done in all four seasons. Generally, they can flower and set fruit in the 2nd year after planting.
3. Root division propagation
Root division propagation is carried out in early spring before sprouting. For a clump of akebia fruit with multiple plants, divide it by hand from the roots into several plants. Without cutting the branches and vines, planting in the same year can produce fruit in the same year.
4. Cutting propagation
Select robust 1-2 year old branches and vines free of pests and diseases, cut them into 10 cm long cuttings, and insert them into a prepared seedbed, paying attention to waterlogging, shading, and drought prevention.
The akebia fruit used as medicine can soothe the liver and strengthen the spleen, harmonize the stomach and regulate qi, promote body fluid and quench thirst, and also has anticancer effects; it can induce labor and soothe the liver, and is used for indigestion, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and can also treat low back pain and promote lactation.
