Although snakehead fish is not as common as crucian carp or carp, it is also a relatively common food fish in our country, and snakehead fish is very ferocious, usually feeding mainly on fish in ponds. Snakehead fish grows very large, so its economic value is high! Many investors have taken a fancy to the characteristics of snakehead fish farming: low investment and high returns!

What to feed snakehead fish when farming them

Snakehead fish bait includes animal offal and various small fish and shrimp. Some farmers feed chicken intestines and have also achieved very good results. If you raise yellow mealworms, fly maggots or earthworms yourself, you can both solve the bait problem and greatly reduce farming costs. Snakehead fish can also be fed artificial compound bait, with the formula being: minced mixed fish and shrimp paste 70%, soybean powder 20%, yeast powder 5%, with the remainder being multivitamin mineral salts, growth promoters and antibiotics. Feed twice a day, with the feeding amount being 5%-7% of the fish body weight, until most fish are full. When using artificial compound bait, feeding training must be carried out from a young age. At the initial stage, earthworms or minced fish and shrimp meat can be placed on a feeding platform, with the platform suspended 20 cm below the water surface, to lure the fry to feed. After the fry are accustomed to feeding on the platform, gradually increase the compound bait. Do not feed live bait during the feeding training, so as not to affect the training effect.

What is snakehead fish

Snakehead fish is the common name for the northern snakehead, also known as snakehead, snakehead fish, wealth fish, snake fish, fire-head fish, etc. Snakehead fish is ferocious by nature, has strong reproductive capacity, and an enormous appetite, and can often eat all the other fish in a certain lake or pond. Snakehead fish can also slide on land, migrate to other waters to seek food, and can live out of water for as long as 3 days. As early as two thousand years ago, it was listed along with stone honey, bee larvae, beeswax (propolis), oysters, turtle shell, mantis egg cases, sea clams, hard clams, carp, etc., as a top-grade insect-fish in the Shennong Bencao Jing. Snakehead fish is a common food fish in China, with a large individual size, fast growth and high economic value. Snakehead fish has few bones, a high meat yield, and is rich in nutrients, with higher protein content than chicken or beef. As a medicine, snakehead fish has effects such as removing blood stasis and promoting new tissue growth, and nourishing and conditioning the body. After surgery, eating snakehead fish has the effect of promoting muscle growth and blood replenishment and promoting wound healing.

Feeding habits of snakehead fish

Snakehead fish swims slowly and generally does not chase prey when hunting. Instead, it hides near aquatic plants or other cover and watches the movements around it intently. Once it finds fish or other palatable live bait swimming nearby, it immediately strikes and captures it in one move. Its food intake is large, and it can often swallow live bait about half its body length, and the maximum capacity of its stomach can reach around 60% of its body weight. According to dissection, a 500 g snakehead fish swallowed 8 grass carp fingerlings 10 cm long in a relatively short time. It also has the habit of cannibalism and can swallow individuals of the same species less than two-thirds of its own body length.

The amount of food a snakehead fish eats is closely related to water temperature. In summer when the water temperature is high, it is quite voracious and eats a large amount. When the water temperature is below 12°C, it stops feeding. Under artificial rearing conditions, when animal feed is insufficient, it can also feed on artificial compound feed such as soybean cake, rapeseed cake and fish meal.

Living habits of snakehead fish

1. Snakehead fish is a wild fish species. It exists in many rivers, lakes, reservoirs, streams and pond canals in both southern and northern China. In some places in the south, there are also special artificial stocking operations, but all in separate ponds. If a few snakehead fish get into someone's fish pond, the fry in that pond will certainly suffer. Snakehead fish is violent and fierce, and has long been known as the "overlord in the water", and is truly a scourge to fish ponds.

2. Snakehead fish is a ferocious carnivorous fish. In the juvenile stage, it mainly feeds on zooplankton in the water, while adult fish specialize in eating small fish, small shrimp, aquatic insects, loach and small frogs.

3. It has extremely strong vitality, tolerates low oxygen, and has strong environmental adaptability. It has a large individual size and grows fast, with a maximum body length of up to 2 m and a body weight of up to 100 kg. After a pond dries up, the snakehead fish burrows into the wet mud and can survive without dying for two to three months. Once there is water, it can revive as if nothing had happened.

4. It is a mid-lower layer fish, often hiding in stone crevices, quiet places or places overgrown with weeds, waiting for an opportunity to capture prey. In summer it often comes to the water surface to bask in the sun, and in winter it dives into the bottom mud layer or among withered grass to overwinter.

5. Snakehead fish likes to inhabit lakes, reservoirs, rivers, ditches and ponds with lush aquatic plants and soft muddy bottoms. It usually lurks at the bottom and only moves to the middle and upper layers of the water when feeding or when there is insufficient oxygen in the water. Snakehead fish has strong adaptability to poor water quality, water temperature and low oxygen. In addition to gills, the respiratory organs of snakehead fish also include an auxiliary respiratory organ (suprabranchial organ). When there is insufficient oxygen in the water, it can stick its head out of the water to directly breathe oxygen from the air.

Although snakehead fish is also a fish, it is much more ferocious than the fish we usually buy in the vegetable market. There are also many wild snakehead fish, which mainly feed on small fish and small shrimp in lakes. Farmed snakehead fish is not as ferocious as wild ones, and usually also feeds mainly on small fish!
