How to choose the right bait for fly maggot breeding
The bait for fly maggots is quite extensive, with the principle of wide bait sources and low prices, and local resources should be fully utilized. In addition to wheat bran, soybean flour, distillers' grains, soybean dregs, soy sauce residue, sunflower hulls, corn cob powder, chicken manure, pig manure, cow manure, and rotten fish are all good bait for fly maggots. If distillers' grains are used as bait, the pH must be adjusted to neutral, and mixed with wheat bran at 1 : 2, which gives better results.
Fly maggot culture media can be divided into two types: one is prepared from agricultural and sideline product scraps such as wheat bran, rice bran, distillers' grains, soybean dregs, sugar residue, slaughterhouse scraps, etc.; the other is made from animal manure such as cow manure, horse manure, pig manure, chicken manure, etc., mixed, composted, and fermented. For the former type, the main thing is to master the mixing ratio of each component, control the moisture content at about 60%, and the substrate should undergo a fermentation process of about 12 hours before egg inoculation. For the latter type of substrate, the raw materials are required to be short, fine, and fresh, with a moisture content of about 70%. Before use, mix two or more substrates in proportion, pile them up, cover with plastic film for composting, and ferment for more than 48 hours before egg inoculation; its pH requirement is between 6.5 and 7.0. If too acidic, lime can be used to adjust it; if too alkaline, dilute hydrochloric acid can be used to adjust it; for each square meter of breeding pool area, pour in 40-50 kg of substrate and inoculate 20-25 g of fly eggs. For example, a maggot culture material with a chicken manure to pig manure ratio of 1 : 2 gives relatively better results. Generally, keep the material thickness at about 7-10 cm, humidity at about 70%-80%, and under conditions of 18-33°C, after about 3-32 hours, larvae can hatch. After 4-5 days, when the larvae have fed on the maggot culture material and grown to before pupation, they can be harvested.
