During the breeding process, each mink needs no more than 0.5 grams of salt added per day to ensure its growth and development salt requirements are met. However, if too much salt is added, or if the salt is not mixed evenly in the feed, it can easily cause salt poisoning in mink, mildly affecting growth and development, and in severe cases causing death.

After salt poisoning, mink show symptoms of thirst, vomiting, drooling, rapid breathing, dilated pupils, general weakness, and purple mucous membranes, and may also develop gastroenteritis; in severe cases they may foam at the mouth with blood-streaked saliva. Some mink after salt poisoning also show signs of extreme excitement, loss of coordination, hoarse screeching, raised tail base, continuous diarrhea, and lowered body temperature. Before death, they may also experience limb spasms and become comatose.

To prevent salt poisoning in mink, the amount of salt added per mink per day must be limited, and it must be mixed thoroughly into the feed. If symptoms of salt poisoning are found in mink, corresponding measures should be taken immediately: first, immediately let the sick mink drink plenty of water, and also feed as much milk as possible; then, reduce the sick mink's food intake by half, stop feeding salt, and instead feed 0.1 grams of sodium carbonate per mink per day; at the same time, for mink that are highly excited and restless, sedative medication should be used for treatment, and in severe cases, 5% glucose injection should also be used, 10 ml--20 ml per mink, injected subcutaneously at multiple points.
