Four Major Causes of Disease in Guppy Breeding
1. Deterioration of water quality
The biggest cause of water quality deterioration is water pollution caused by overfeeding and the accumulation of harmful substances caused by dirty filters. As long as daily feeding is appropriate, and the filters are properly cleaned and the water quality is adjusted, it can be prevented. Although appropriate water changes are also necessary, do not change too much water at once, as this can harm guppies, so be a little careful. Over-cleaning the filter also washes away the beneficial filter bacteria that have multiplied, leading to deterioration of water quality.
2. Changes in water temperature
Guppies are poikilothermic animals, meaning their body temperature changes with the surrounding temperature. Whether the water temperature is high or low, it hinders the normal functioning of the fish's body, and in particular, a rise or drop in water temperature is the most fatal blow to guppies. As a result, metabolism in the body becomes poor, appetite decreases, and the fish weakens. Also pay attention to large temperature differences between early and late in the season.
3. Rough handling of the fish's body
The surface of a guppy's body is especially delicate and easily damaged, so when scooping it up with a net, be especially careful, otherwise once the body surface is damaged, bacteria can invade through the wound and cause infection. If you scoop it up by hand instead of with a net, do not damage the fish's body with your fingernails. Please pay special attention.
4. Bringing in disease
Among the reasons guppies are prone to illness, it is estimated that the largest proportion is infection from other fish. If you place newly purchased guppies into the fish tank, you must first confirm whether they have any disease, or first keep them in another tank for observation for three to five days, and only put them in after confirming there is no disease.
