Points to Note During the Mating Process in Tibetan Mastiff Breeding
After the female mastiff shows signs of estrus, you should begin selecting a fine male mastiff as her mate. The quality of the male mastiff will directly affect the quality of the next generation of mastiff pups. Choose a male mastiff with no signs of degeneration, a stable nervous type, a robust constitution, fast growth and development, and strong disease resistance and reproductive capacity. The best time for mating should be between 12-13 days after the female mastiff begins bleeding from the vulva. At this time the female mastiff begins to ovulate, the reproductive tract is ready for mating, and the female mastiff also shows signs of willingness to mate, such as full swelling or even eversion of the vulva, a reduced amount of vaginal discharge that gradually changes from the initial blood-tinged mucus to a pale color or no visible blood. If you press the female mastiff's lower back with your hand or support and press her tail, she will stand still, raise her tail to one side, and frequently open and close the vulva. In the presence of a male mastiff she frequently urinates, indicating a willingness to approach the male mastiff, allowing the male mastiff to sniff her vulva and accepting the male mastiff mounting her; sometimes she even mounts the male mastiff, showing increasingly strong sexual desire. After observing these signs, let them mate as soon as possible. Be sure to mate when the female mastiff's desire to mate is strongest and the signs of estrus are most obvious. It is best to mate twice, namely the first mating and the repeat mating. The interval between the two should preferably be 24-48 hours, so as not to affect the development of the fetus. The mating location is best in the place where the female mastiff lives, and do not let many people crowd around to watch, so as to avoid frightening them during the mating process and affecting the mating. Mating should mainly use natural methods, supplemented by manual assistance. During mating, after the penis is inserted into the vagina, ejaculation begins within a few seconds, and then the corpus cavernosum fully expands into a plug-like state. At this time the female mastiff will twist her body, trying to throw the male mastiff off her back, or the male mastiff dismounts on his own, and the male and female mastiffs assume a tail-to-tail position. This plugged state lasts 10-25 minutes, sometimes longer. At this time the male mastiff's penis will rotate 180 degrees inside the female mastiff's vagina and ejaculate again, so they must not be forcibly separated at this point, otherwise the reproductive organs will be severely damaged.
After the male and female mastiffs separate, they will each lick their genitals. Do not immediately pull or drag them or their bodies, especially the male mastiff; after mating he often develops a sunken lower back, commonly known as “dropping the kidney”, and must absolutely not be allowed to exercise vigorously. After mating they must also not be allowed to drink water immediately; they should rest for a while and move around a little before being allowed to drink. As for the mating time, in summer it is best in the early morning or evening, while in winter mating at noon is preferable. Before mating, it is best not to feed them or not to feed them too full, so as to avoid vomiting caused by mating immediately after eating.
