What are the precautions for breeding pet dogs?
What to pay attention to in mating is choosing the most suitable mating age for the dog. Generally, the mating time for male dogs is best after 1 year of age. For the most suitable mating age for female dogs, the following factors should be noted:
(1) Bitches in heat should be kept under close supervision to prevent them from being secretly mated by a male dog not selected, thereby affecting the quality of the offspring; male dogs should also not be allowed to go out looking for bitches in heat, otherwise they may easily spread diseases or be bitten by other male dogs while competing for a mate.
(2) Mating should be carried out in a quiet, clean place. Apart from the dog owner, do not let other idle people gather around and make noise.
(3) After mating, do not immediately give water or engage in intense exercise; the male and female dogs should each return to their kennels and rest for a while.
(4) Male dogs should not mate frequently, so as not to affect their health and shorten their breeding years. A prime-age male dog can mate once a day, and after 3—4 days should rest for one day. If occasionally mating twice in one day, there should be an interval of more than 6 hours, and the next day it must rest. The mating frequency for young male dogs and old male dogs should be even lower. When under unavoidable circumstances the number of matings is increased, nutrition should be strengthened to make up for it. Once a male dog is over 12 years old, it should generally no longer be used for mating.
(5) Although a bitch can reproduce two litters each year, giving birth too frequently affects the physique of both the bitch and the puppies. According to the bitch's age and health status, it is generally more suitable to control it to three litters in two years or one litter per year. Bitches over 9 years old are generally not suitable for further breeding.
(6) For each bitch, carefully record the date each heat begins, the number of days each stage of heat lasts, and the mating dates, etc., for future reference.
