Prevention and Treatment of Rabies in Nutria Breeding
1) Prodromal stage. During this period, affected nutrias are briefly depressed and move slowly; the symptoms at this stage are not easy to notice.
2) Excitation stage. Affected nutrias show excitement and aggressive behavior, lunging at people and other animals, biting, clawing, and tearing everything they encounter. Affected nutrias can injure their own tongue, teeth, and gums and can break their lower teeth. Affected nutrias refuse food, do not drink water, and often swallow various objects placed in the cage. The violent stage recurs repeatedly; during episodes the affected nutrias groan, salivate excessively, and have diarrhea.
3) Paralysis stage. During this stage the paralysis process intensifies, manifesting as swaying of the hindquarters and paralysis of the hind limbs. Body temperature drops. Sick nutrias cannot rise, lie down unconsciously, and die in spasms and convulsions.
(2) Necropsy: the gastrointestinal mucosa is congested or hemorrhagic; the liver is dark red and flaccid; the spleen is slightly enlarged, and there are also cases in which it is 2-3 times larger than normal. Anemia is found in the kidneys, and the boundary between the cortical layer and the medullary layer disappears. In some cases there is pulmonary hemorrhage. In the brain, congestion appears due to blood vessels being highly filled and dilated with blood. The fluid in the ventricles increases, and pinpoint hemorrhages are often found in the brain tissue.
4) Prevention. The measure for preventing rabies on nutria farms is to resolutely prevent outside dogs from entering the nutria breeding area; keepers must also be vaccinated against rabies. If rabies-infected nutrias are found on the farm, a blockade must be resolutely implemented, and the epidemic situation must be reported promptly to the higher competent department. Resolutely prevent sick nutrias on the farm from escaping off the farm; confirmed rabies-infected nutrias or carcasses of nutrias that died of the disease must all be burned or deeply buried; individuals that have not developed the disease must be examined one by one so that sick nutrias are detected in time. Healthy nutrias must all be injected with rabies hyperimmune serum, and 7-10 days later injected with rabies vaccine. Counting from the last case that died of rabies, the blockade is lifted after 2 months.
