Along with the continuous improvement of people's living standards in our country, river snails have now gradually made their way into thousands of households, and with the continuous rise of the late-night snack industry, the demand for river snails will also grow more and more.

Causes of mold disease in river snails

Caused by mold parasitism, mainly harming young snails.  We know that the growing environment of river snails is ponds, small rivers, rice paddies and other small watersheds in subtropical regions. This warm and humid climate and topographical features are extremely favorable for the growth of parasites. When river snails live in this environment, there will more or less be parasites present in their bodies. And for farmed river snails, the growing environment is not necessarily ideal either. Therefore, when we eat them, we must prevent parasites from harming the human body, and enjoy this feast of taste in a healthy and delicious way.

In a truth experiment, deadly parasites in river snails were demonstrated, which caused quite a few citizens to worry about parasitic diseases. But doctors said that after high-temperature steaming and boiling, these parasites will all be killed, so they can then be eaten.

Regarding parasites in river snails, doctors said that yellow eels, loaches and shrimp and crabs will all contain a certain amount of parasites in their bodies to varying degrees. This is related to their growing environment. To prevent parasitic diseases, these aquatic products must be cooked thoroughly before eating. Therefore, “never eat river snails, loaches, lobsters, etc. raw, but after high-temperature steaming and boiling, these parasites will all be killed, so there is no need to worry too much.

Symptoms of mold disease in river snails

In the early stage of the disease, there are opaque small spots at the tail and the base of its appendages, which then enlarge, and in severe cases spread over the whole body and cause the snail to die.

Treatment of mold disease in river snails

Use 0.2 g per cubic meter of malachite green or 200 g per cubic meter of formalin, soaking the diseased snails for 30 minutes each day.

Most parasites are not sensitive to chemical reagents, but they cannot tolerate dryness and high temperature; boiling water can kill them in just a few seconds. The freshwater fish we normally eat are 100 percent parasitized by parasites, but as long as they are thoroughly cooked, they are generally not infectious. This is also the fundamental reason why we eat freshwater fish yet are rarely infected by parasites.

River snails may transmit schistosomiasis. Usually, after river snails are stir-fried over high heat and cooked, about 20 minutes is enough to kill the parasite eggs inside, so they will no longer transmit the disease to humans. Therefore, as long as river snails are fully cooked, there is no problem, and they can be eaten with peace of mind.
