Methods for Controlling Natural Enemies During Gecko Farming
The main natural enemies of geckos are ants, snakes, rats, birds, cats, etc. Although ants are small, they can bite geckos, affecting their molting, to the point that the wounds fester and break open. Snakes, rats, birds, cats, etc. prey on geckos, posing a direct threat.
1) Control of ants There are many methods for controlling ants; several are introduced here. ① When building a gecko rearing house, the walls should be plastered tightly with cement mortar, leaving not a single crack, to prevent ants from getting in. ② Dig a ditch 15 cm deep and 20 cm wide around the gecko rearing room or rearing ground; if the ditch is kept filled with water, ants cannot enter. ③ Spread a band of quicklime 15-20 cm wide outside the gecko rearing room, and ants cannot enter either. ③ Spread a band of quicklime 15-20 cm wide outside the gecko rearing room, and ants cannot enter either. ④ Mix 1 part chlordane powder with 4 parts clay, blend with water into a slurry, and apply a ring band 20 cm wide around the base of the outer wall of the rearing room; when ants reach the base of the wall, the effect of the chemical keeps them from approaching the wall base any further. ⑤ When ants appear, mix ant-killing powder with wheat bran and spread a band 20 cm wide around the gecko rearing room or rearing ground; this can also stop ants from entering. ⑥ Once ants are found moving about in the gecko rearing room or rearing ground, place some fresh animal bones inside; when the ants smell the rank odor of the bones, they will come to gnaw on them, and at that point take out the fresh bones and scald the ants to death with boiling water.
2) Control of natural enemies such as snakes, rats and cats The base of the walls and the walls of the gecko rearing room or rearing ground should be plastered tightly with cement mortar, and doors and windows should all be fitted with screen doors and screen windows, to prevent these natural enemies from entering during ventilation.
